Possible myofascial pain, and stubborn doctor
      #208073 - 12/16/04 07:18 AM

I've been having pain and tightness in my neck and in the muscles right below my neck on my upper back for a couple years now, on and off. The pain gets so intense that it shoots up my neck and gives me near-migraine level headaches in the back of my head.

Recently it's been more "on" than it has been "off". So I decided to go see my doctor about it a few months ago. First he gave me Flexoril and Clinoril . The Flexoril worked okay, but I had a reaction to the Clinoril, so he switched the script to a prescription strength Aleve, which was worthless.

I ran out of Flexoril, and I was taking between 800-1000mg of Ibuprofen for about 5 weeks when I decided to go see him again. This was a week and a half ago. He refilled my Flexoril, and I requested something for the pain during the day, since Flexoril makes me drowsy, and at times the pain was unbearable. He hesitated, I told him about the Ibuprofen. He reluctantly gave me a script for 12ct 5/500 Vicodin, which is gone already, which I warned him about. He also gave me a referral to a local physical therapy/pain management type place, but the earliest I could get an appointment is a month after I'm scheduled to check in with my doctor.

Basically my doctor doesn't want to give me what I need. I wasn't that surprised - I'm only 22 years old, and the way he was acting says he was stereotyping. So here's my question: is this a place where I can get authorization for some kind of pain medication (from someone who is actually willing to help), or somewhere I can buy it directly without dealing with my doctor?

Thanks for any help - DPW

Hello and welcome! There are 2 ways of getting the meds you need. First is a No-record OP. These places are basically an online questionaire and perhaps a short phone call from a doctor. They are expensive but you can usually get your meds within a few days. Do a search for NROP's and you can choose which one would work for you.
Second is a consultation place that will require you to fax some records documenting your problem. Then, for a fee, a doctor will call you for a phone consultation. This way will save you money in the long run and there is speculation that this way is "more legal". Do a lot of reading! All the information you need is right here. PM me if you wish and I may be able to help you further as I have used both types of providers.

Good luck!

I too have myofascial pain syndrome, but pain meds don't really help for me since the problem is muscular. Soma helps quite a bit, but it will make you tired. You could try tramadol too. Many NROP's carry them and you can get it overnight without records. Netrxforless and emedstoday are 2 examples.

Get a copy of your records from your doctor, and if you're looking for pain meds, go with a records OP. Medsmadesimple is a good one, or if you need something before your records arrive, you can go to someplace like Online-scripts, where you'll do a telephone consult, they'll send you your meds, but you'll need to get your records to them before they'll let you refill.

I have severe TMJ and have suffered for 2 years. I've had splints built (500-3,500 apiece and I have 6), even had veneers (caps) put on my teeth because a DDS convinced me that by realigning my bite with veneers the pain would go away. Well, I'm 25,000 in the hole and still live in severe pain! I understand how you're feeling. I recommend a records OP. I have had great luch with Doctor-Appointments.com. I receive 140 Norco 10/325 each month. I would go through the roof without them. They don't take the pain away, but they do make it a bit more liveable. It is very difficult to find a local DR who knows what they're talking about regarding facial pain. Best of luck to you!

I was just at my PM doc this week with this problem...terrible muscle spasms as a result of having three surgeries in my upper back this year. He did trigger point injections which did provide some relief...and he will do botox injections at my next appointment. Botox is made from botulin poison..diluted to a safe level...it actually paralyzes the muscles so they can't spasm...he said it works in like 99% of the worst cases he has seen...So I would take that PM referral & see if you could get this done....it usually needs authorization by insurance..so see if they can do trigger points on your first visit & get you set up for Botox ....you may also want to consider ordering some valium from an OP Or IOP---there's one that offers domestic shipping and sends I think 110 tabs for around $100.00...it would make you sleepy but will work much better than flexaril. Good luck let us know how you fare in all of this. Also the PM doc will be more likely to prescribe some real pain meds for you.

Cheers on the pointers guys, I'm going to look into some of those other options you gave me - I'll let you know what happens.

Thanks again for the help!

Welcome DPW~ I also have myofacial pain and fibro, after many years of searching I finally did find a good rheumatologist that is willing to prescribe narcotic pain medication for these conditions, just not near enough. I was referred to a pain management specialist who doesn't believe in ANY pain meds at all - so I went through a 4 week program on how to deal with pain without using pain medications of any kind. I gave it 100% and found a lot of the info was very helpful, but it boils down to the fact that I *do* need some pain meds even when I incorporate these other methods. Ultram didn't work very well for me and I take Wellbutrin - Ultram doesn't mix well with some anti-depressants (seizure risk) so I stopped the Ultram and use an OP for my "break through" pain meds if you will.

As others stated above, get your medical records! They should be sufficient to get what you need from an OP.

Best of luck!
