Visted TJ and Mexico for a few days recently.
Here is the rub... TJ now has very few pharmacies that can legally sell controlled substances, of the 100 or so I visited only 10 would sell controlled meds. All but one of the 10 did not require a script, but that one wanted an exoborant amount of money.
TJ doctors, which are not real easy to find(best bet is to look in the downtown TJ area)and are now asking around $40-20usd for one script(OUCH!!). That realy dosnt matter, becasue the price of most meds even with a script was crazy... I actually found it cheeper to go to the local big supermarket to their(Walmart style) pharmacia to purchase z-pack and retin-a. Supermarket med prices were better than the negotiated prices with the street pharmacies, not to mention that if they carry the beer or wine you want, you will save several dollars and hassels with that purchase.
Oxys could be found from waiters/taxi trivers/etc, but at $1 a milligram. I actually found that the street vendors or the waiters were able to give better deals on meds, but beware of not having a script in TJ.
If you really want to save some money you need to drive at least 50-120 miles down the baja strip. I will have to look up the specific towns, but many of them now cater to US visitors and have very reasonable prices for food, beer, meds, and 4-5 star lodgeing and in general the people and towns are much more relaxing(compared to TJ). If one had a car, a drive down the baja coast would be a trip worth taking just for the sites and beautiful ocean views!
The foot hike back into the US is now a little more laxed... No metal detectors were observed, unless they pick you out for some strange reason. Your bags of corse are still x-rayed, but over all the trip(s) back were shorter and with no hassels.
To sum it up..... For some reason the apparent authorities that be in Mexico are now cracking down in TJ, and the once rampant med sales, and illgal activites have all but ceased. I really got the feeling that TJ is trying to get rid of that dirty ol town image and get in the tourist that dont mind spending 2-4usd for a beer or 2-4 for a shot(OUCH)!!!
Anyway, Im back and glad to see DB is still here after my two week escape from reality.

I fotgot to mention price comparisons....
10mg#90 valium in TJ with or without a script about 65-70(best) Asking price for #90 1mg Tafil was 90usd, dont pay more than 75usd
10 mg#90 valium down a few miles in Baja went for about 45-50usd, no script, and 1mg Tafil was about$10usd more.
Oh and beware, I found it common pratice for mex pharms to try and sell 2mg Klonopin as 2mg ruffies. Oh and dont forget to watch put for neo=percodan, still a common scam.

Had to laugh out loud on the Klonopin thing. Hmmmm imagine taking my Klon and ending up taking a roofie. Boy I bet I would sleep then. Still have anxiety but could sleep. Yeah that is what I have been saying about Texas all this time, they are really cracking down on illegal activities. But you have to remember this is Bush country and you know how the Bushes are. Yeah it is still easy to get Soma and antibiotics but the controlled stuff is almost impossible here without a script.
Sounds like you had a great time anyway.

Were you crossing with scheduled meds? That is where the problems lies. Otherwise yeah they let you go cross with no problem.

Tips for no problems with me crossing with controlled meds -Don't carry more than 180 and don't declare them. Always buy & declare the tequila and the cigarettes ( I don't smoke tobacco) though. And buy a couple mini bottles of mescal with the worm in it - that really makes one look like a tourist.
There are plenty of farmacias that sell controlled meds, they just aren't on Revolucion or the main streets. And yes the prices are generally higher than one would expect. Doctors can also be found readily available - off the beaten paths, sometimes next to or above the farmacias. Get a script from a local doc and you can get whatever you want - just remember the script is no good out of mexico.

hi there...
i'm in baja (on the coast, with car)
i just dont know what to ask for, i'm only here for a few days, i have an IOP i am faithful to with my business and med needs, but i wound up staying a few extra days and dont have all my meds with me for (obviously) a chronic pain issue... (different thread altogether...) (i know that's ridiculous to fail to plan ahead for this situation... but oh well, i'm already here and i am not the driver)
i bought some tramadol to help out, but i'm wondering what else is reasonable. i have no desire to learn about mexican jail, and i only want enough to last 3 days. tylenol #3 will even work, i just don't know what i can expect and was wondering if anyone might be able to answer. i'm about 50 miles south of tijuana into baja. feel free to PM me and hope everyone is well.

Is it still legal to import for personal use? Back in the day (3 or 4 years ago now) I used to be able to go to TJ and stop in at a pharmacy where I'd get a referral to a doctor to write a script for $25-30 and walk out with 30-90 Valium (depending on the doctor). I ALWAYS declared the medication at the border, and after looking both the medication and the script they'd wave me through.
I thought I'd heard those laws had changed? If they haven't substantially changed, declare for sure. If they have then its just too much hassle. There always was something a little seedy about the whole thing and gambling with US border patrol would definitely tank the whole experience for me.
