hello
I have been concerned about mixing alcohol with hydrocodone because of the obvious damage with the apap.
I was told that the supplement:
N-Acetyl-Cysteine can dramatically help. It helps the liver break down apap.
You can find it at GNC.
Anyone else use it?

i do not know what crysteine's mechanism is but the breaking down of APAP into its toxic metabolite by CYP2E1 is bad, CYP2E1 inhibitors may help:
Reduction of toxic metabolite formation of acetaminophen.
Hazai E, Vereczkey L, Monostory K.
Chemical Research Center, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, H-1525 Budapest, Hungary.
Acetaminophen is a widely used over-the-counter drug that causes severe hepatic damage upon overdose. Cytochrome P450-dependent oxidation of acetaminophen results in the formation of the toxic N-acetyl-p-benzoquinone-imine (NAPQI). Inhibition of cytochrome P450 enzymes responsible for NAPQI formation might be useful--besides N-acetylcysteine treatment--in managing acetaminophen overdose. Investigations were carried out using human liver microsomes to test whether selective inhibition of cytochrome P450s reduces NAPQI formation. Selective inhibition of CYP3A4 and CYP1A2 did not reduce, whereas the inhibition of CYP2A6 and CYP2E1 significantly decreased NAPQI formation. Furthermore, selective CYP2E1 inhibitors that are used in human therapy were tested for their inhibitory effect on NAPQI formation. 4-Methylpyrazole, disulfiram, and diethyl-dithiocarbamate were the most potent inhibitors with IC(50) values of 50 microM, 8 microM, and 33 microM, respectively. Although cimetidin is used in the therapy of acetaminophen overdose as an inhibitor of cytochrome P450, it is not able to reduce NAPQI formation.

A good detox combo for anyone and anything is L-Methionine, L-Cysteine and L-Glutathione, (500mg of all). Take with 1000mg vitamin C. And go with one of the good labs like Twinlab or Natures Plus. Stay away from that GNC and Whole Foods [censored]. Their caps don't contain what they claim in testing. If you're in bad shape, check out Thymate. It's an immune system formula and actually producing results with aids patients

lela...do you have a source that supports your bashing the GNC and Whole Foods products?

Yes, there are lab testing reports and my doctor has copies if you would like some. Sorry, I didn't intend to "bash" any business, just trying to help and be truthful. I'm just very adamant when it comes to natural supplements, I've been "into" this for more years than you would like to know. I apologize if I offended you or anyone else, especially if you own stock in either of these companies.
Someone has to police these independent labs too.
