I'm sorry if I'm grossing out some of you but i was wondering if any of you have had experience with rectal use of benzodiazepines. I know the colon is a place of rapid absorption. Do you need a specific form of the med to do it this way? I'm not an injector so that route is not for me. Any comments appreciated.

just about anything can be used rectally. (including objects not ment for that) The biggest concern with any thing is irritation. The chemicals and binders in an oral tablet can irritate and cause a perferation. which if you perferate the rectum will probly requrie surgery and explaining. if you are looking for a more rapid absorbiton os an oral medication the place to do it is under your tounge also called sublingual. there are numerous blood vessels there and is less likely to irritate the mouth.
some injectable meds can be used perrectally a good example is valium.

I was about to put up a lenghty post on "How To" administer opioids rectally, but I decided that it's better if left off of the board. If you want the information, please PM me and I will more than happy to share my knowledge on this subject.
Take care.

The question is: is the absorption faster?

everyday i come on this board i learn new things...never in my mind i thought you could do this...but im not the kind of person that could do something like that...i have had sublingual meds before and i know they work pretty fast but honesty i have never heard of using pains meds rectal or any other way...but i am sure you can...i am all for getting them to work faster because by taking by mouth it takes them 30-45 min to start working

Hi - certaiun countries in Europe (specifically France) have used and MFGed many common meds as suppositories. Here in the US it kinda limited to anti-nausea and pain meds (which makes sense).
But the main reason is because the duration of dose is about 50-100% longer. The onset time is doubled too.
I found this out when the DR got my stomach bleeding with VICODIN DS (with count it, count it, ONE GRAM OF tylenol per dose - take two doses every 4-6 hours and throw up blood in teh morning!) I got the morph suppisitories for a while.
Guess it's time to leaqve - backs hurting aqnd I'm starting to get cynical and mad at Dr's in general.

I know someone who converts many of her medications to suppositories...
She crushes the tabs with a mortar and pestle...and if I'm not mistaken, she mixes the resulting powder with cocoa butter. Then she uses a mold to shape the suppositories.
There are a couple of different types of molds, both which can be purchased online. A health store like GNC would probably have them as well.
You would have to crush the tabs one at a time or else you couldn't be sure how many mgs you'd be getting in each suppository...unless you had a really accurate scale to measure out the desired doseage.
Seemed like a lot trouble to me. I'm happy taking my meds orally...although, she swore by this method of drug delivery.

Boy,
when I started this post I never really expected the creativity out there. I'm gonna keep using my mouth as the point of entry. Thanks for all the neat ideas, though.

Better solution is see if your OP will dispense Zydone 10/400 hydrocodone it melts in your mouth for real fast absorption. Been trying to get NWW and their pharmacy to carry it but like everything with them it's like pulling teeth. Plus Zydone is cheaper than Norco 10/325's

zippy, you reminded me of a friend of mine and her experience with suppositories ... she had never used meds rectally before and did not know you can actually take meds that way, so when she was given a certain med to be administered in that form she swallowed it down her throat lol lol lol

For us girls only! when I was undergoing infertility treatment i was prescribed estrogen & progesterone vaginal suppositories. I still (dr. suggestion) take my estrogen pills vaginally. Maybe other meds would be OK delivered that way too?
Good grief! the crazy but fascinating threads on this forum!!

I coudln't answer that one... but since I know for a fact that you can purchase Codeine suppositories from IOP's, I know the back-door works great.. It's honestly not as bad as it may sound. Better, stronger, faster. Again, for further information just PM me.

I would say the back/front door works fine for a lot of meds, just like nose does, after all!

It really depends on the benzo. For example, Valium is not water soluble.
Are you just going to push the tablets up there and hope that they'll dissolve? The pH of your colon is much higher than the pH of your stomach so tablets might not dissolve the same way. I guess you could get the benzo in an injectable form and "squirt" it up there like an enema but then anything that leaks out is wasted.
What's wrong with taking them as directed? You don't need to swallow. Just let it melt in your mouth, not in your [censored]. Or ... just skip the GI tract completely. Sounds like you'll be ending up there sooner or later.

I have heard of this before. But with MDMA pills, and I think it is called "boofing". I have never tried this and hope tha t Luca_Brasi is a female. Seems like he/she loves this method and I can only imagine the shapes of the "molds" that he/she uses.

I don't think you can take benzos rectally because of all of the binders in them and it being non-solluble in water. But hey, it's your body...treat it like you want
