New Rules at Post Office Regarding International Packages?
      #197626 - 11/01/04 02:22 PM

Today I went to the post office to mail some eBay packages and I had one going to Canada. I filled it out as I normally do and when I handed it to the clerk, he told me that they had received an urgent memo regarding better security with international packages and new procedures for shipping them. He told me that all contents have to be specific and the return address had to include my middle name, as well as my first and last (I normally use a return address label with just my first and last name and he made me write my middle name in there). My item was a book, and that is what I listed on the customs form, and he told me that I had to specifically put the title of the book on the customs form. He said that they are getting very strict on international mail.

I went onto the eBay community boards to see if anyone else mentioned this new procedure and I found some threads on international packages taking a very long time recently, and one thread mentioned that there is a 5 week backup on inspection of packages at the Canadian border.

About 6 weeks ago, I ordered from an international OP that I've ordered from many times and it usually takes about 10-14 days for it to get to me. I was sure that it got seized, but Saturday it was finally delivered, and arrived registered mail requiring a signature (this company usually doesn't require one), and completely covered in the green customs inspection tape. The product was intact in the box, though, so they didn't seize the product.

I'm wondering if the more strict guidelines on international shipments are going to make it harder to receive our meds now.

Last week, I mailed eBay packages to England and Australia and there wasn't anything mentioned about the new guidelines (same clerk), so I think this must be a new thing. The postal clerk said the memo had just arrived.

Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Try here and click news or browse if you like. I've not heard of anything like that and don;t see anything related to it.

Canada customs will now scrutinize any international mail that does not have a clear return address or full name of receiver. Doesn't mean they will stop it but they may give it another look. Just remember they are understaffed, underfunded and underpayed so keep that in mind if you decide to get worried. Just follow th rules. It doesn't have to be your name and return address - who can tell?

its been like this here in Australia since 9/11. We have to show ID like a driver's licence in order to send a package overseas. We also fill out that customs declaration as to what's in the package & how much it's worth. It doesnt require specifics like a book's name though. That bit sounds quite odd.

I guess I won't be able to ship packages since I don't have a middle name.

I'm the starter of this thread, and since I posted it, I've mailed packages to Mexico, Canada, and United Kingdom, and they didn't ask me to put my middle name on the package for them or make me list book titles. I think I just got an overzealous postal worker that day that misread a memo and was overly strict. Thank goodness, I was about to stop shipping overseas. It is a pain already to ship internationally for eBay because sometimes the shipping times can be really long, customs delays packages for a while, and the customers are always anxious. I have a package mailed to Canada 2 weeks ago that hasn't turned up and I live about 20 minutes away from the Canadian border! I actually like to sell internationally, but on eBay, it can be hard with the threat of negative feedback from a newbie buyer in another country that doesn't understand that sometimes packages can take up to a month or more.
