I have a friend at work who went down to Nuevo Laredo last weekend with a bunch of people's cash to purchase anti-biotics, some veterenary products, and so on. He says that when they were coming back, they "made it past the first checkpoint but were searched and taken to jail by the Nuevo Laredo police at the second checkpoint." I guess there were four of them in all, and they had to stay at the jailhouse for 7 hours total according to this acquaintance.
So anyway, they are at the police station (or so he says), and he said the "seargent" gave them three choices: 1) to accompany them to the bathroom to flush all the medications, or 2) to make their way through the Napoleanic system and possibly spend months there waiting for trial and possible sentencing or 3) to make them go through US Customs with the medications and a notification from the Mexican authorities as to what they are holding.
The reason this doesn't make sense to me is:
a) The only checkpoints when leaving Mexico are at US Customs.
b) The Mexican police are NEVER known to be that lenient when dealing with gringos carrying large amounts of medications that require prescriptions.
According to my friend, they had some stuff for which the doctor pulled out a list and had them point to pictures (just to give you some idea of what they were carrying). Meanwhile, the other folks at work are out a couple thousand dollars amongst them (not me, I have other, more legit ways to get my meds). I think he ripped off the people at work, but when I mentioned that possibility to someone and explained the inconsistencies, they wouldn't hear of it.

Hey Opie, I realize you made your post quite awhile back, but I thought I'd reply anyhow. I've been over the border at Del Rio, TX into Acuna many times, and there is only one "checkpoint" by the mexican police when you are coming back. It's basically just driving through and telling them you are US citizens. They don't care much about anything else. Now the US customs is a different story, depending on if you are driving back or walking back. Your co-worker's story sounds like a bunch of hooooooooey to me.
