It is an antiseizure med that many give for extreme pain to try and stop the nerves from transmitting pain. They should step you up over time. If you start feeling at all mentally not with it - REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY and ask to be stepped back down. I was on it for 3 months and finally they took me off it when I couldn't remember my name (I'm a math doctoral student - made life super hard!) and I still have some neural paths missing from 2 years ago. Be very careful - for those that it works for it is great, just make sure to report any and all side effects and don't discount anything!

All I know about this drug is that my son who is in his 30's had spinal surgery for stenosis. He was given Neurontin in the hospital and put on it when he came home. Three days after he was home he suffered a big seizure - wife was at work, kids at school and he estimates that he was "out" for about 2 hours when they found him - which was at 5ish - last he remembered was trying to get up from taking a nap around 3PM. When they came home they found him on floor, blood all over the place - he apparently had hit his head on floor and kept trying to get up and falling down again. He was NOT conscious - his wife called ambulance - the kids were terrified - ambulance came and took him to local hospital where they could NOT bring him around - they shipped him back to Mass general where surgery had taken place. They finally brought him to a conscious state after he was there about an hour - by now it was 7PM - he had been "out" since around 3 PM according to his estimate. I flew up to Boston on the last shuttle out of LaGuardia and when I got there at 11PM he was still talking gibberish. Finally by the morning he was OK - and we took him home - but he was taken off the Neurontin. Apparently this stuff which is given to PREVENT seizures can have a contradictory effect in some people. After seeing all of this I would NOT go near Neurontin!!!!!!!!

Neurontin is a really good medicine for treating neuropathic pain (such as if you have a burning sensation caused by a diabetic peripheral neuropathy).
I would recommend it for those that don't want to be stoned all the time on narcotics. Incidently, narcotics do not treat neuropathic pain well anyhow.
So it is at least an option for some.

I believe it is also used as a mood stabilizer too.
