I am having all 4 wisdon teeth extracted at this dental school that I have written about in past posts. Two of the teeth just need to be removed and two have erupted acording to the information I was given. They will put me to sleep for the procedure but when I wake and the drugs were off, will I really hurt? I have never had any teeth removed and I am very nervous about this.
One or two are causing horrible headaches. Even taking Avinza (morphine ) and 3-4 lortab 10's do nothing. The only thing that helps is plain tylenol. Go figure. But I have been living on the stuff for months.
So to any that wish to share , that would be appreciated. I read one poster said that she had a bad tooth removed and her entire personality changed from depression to hope. I hope this happens to me since I have been severly depresssed lately and the up coming holidays don't help.
I told my doctor about all the up coming dental work and he could have cared less. Basically, half my teeth will get crowns or other work. I also told him that I have been offerred pain killers so he doesn't find out that I double dipped even though we have no drug contract. It was just being curteous.
One other question. Am I going to be able to take my daily ration of pain killer pills or will I hurt to much or not be able to swallow them and should I ask for a liquid pain killer to take home?
If so, any suggestions. Sometimes dentists and doctors will take your recommendation and the staff at the dental school are very cool about pain killers for this operation. I also don't think what I take for my back will work since it does not help my headaches.
Thanks

Well I suggest still taking the avinza and lortab for awhile afterward even if not in pain, just to be able to slowlytaper off so you don't go into withdrawl. Not everyone does but most do. Especially if you have taken them for months.

If none of the teeth are impacted, you shouldn't have too much pain afterwards, but most likely some.
Start to load up on Vitamin C at least 3 days before your appointment. Vitamin C in your system prevents swelling after the teeth have been extracted.
I am sure the dentist or Oral Surgeon that is performing the procedure will give you a script for pain.
If you are a smoker, it is IMPERATIVE that you refrain from smoking AT LEAST 24 hours AFTER your surgery.
They will also give you post-op instructions for you to follow.
Hope this helps; good luck & God bless!
Peace,

If you can afford it, go to Walgreens and find some Commit lozenges that you can suck on for the next 5-7 days...god's gift to the smoker after oral surgery...just don't "suck" on them, park it under your tongue and swish it around a lot.

All the posts have excellent advice. I had 3 removed at once and basically missed a day and a half of work. Not bad at all really. Certainly uncomfortable but the pain meds will make it manageable. A heck of a lot better than the pain my teeth were causing. The worst part for me was not really being able to eat what I wanted But like everyone said, just follow your post op instructions carefully and you'll be fine. Not a big deal.

I had 2 removed and survived, also lost 10 lbs. I'm sure the dentist would give you Mepergan (50mg demerol and 25 mg phenergan, for nausea) as it is an excellent combo and great for dental procedures. The phenergan greatly potentiates the demerol and it will be smooth sailing. Have plenty of gatorade at your side and ICE CREAM!! Good Luck.

Everyone has given great advise!! I think you will be ok.
I had all four of mine done when I was 16...OH BOY!
For me, when I start getting a lot of pain I get tensed up and the pain seems to get worse, so I take a valuiam about an hour before I take a pain pill.
It calms me down and lets the pain med work. I don't do this all the time, just when it gets unberable.
I hope some of this info will help.
Please keep us posted on how your doing.
I wish you the best & a fast recovery!
OH Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!!

I had all mine done (4) plus a root canal and experienced much less discomfort in the aftermath than I expected...
lived on percocet for a few days ...then refilled for lortabs for a few more...then went straight to motrin...
all in all, not as bad as i was told it would be...
Ice cream was a big help though...soup and oatmeal too...

It isn't going to be bad at all. I recently had 3 pulled, and my upper two wisdom teeth were pulled years ago. I had this horrible wisdom tooth (the lower left one) that was twisted and so painful, I would cry. Vicodin HP (even taking two of them) along with 3 or 4 Motrin, didn't take the pain away. I went and had them removed finally (after suffering for over a year), and it was such a relief that I didn't even notice any pain afterwards. Honestly, you will be suprised, especially seeing you are suffering so much now. It won't be bad, in fact, you will feel liberated!
I was awake during the removal of the last 3 teeth (a lower wisdom tooth, the molar right next to it, and an upper cracked tooth) and it took hardly any time at all. I was sure the wisdom tooth removal was going to be horrible as it was impacted and really sideways, but honestly, I don't even remember him pulling it. I remember him pulling the two others (but it didn't hurt at all because of the novacaine) and I thought to myself, "2 down, and one to go," but it turned out that he already removed them all and I was done!
Trust me, you will be very relieved and probably feeling much better than when you went in!

Had em all impacted and yanked 20 yrs ago, They put me completely out. Requested ketamine for general, (sodium pentothal made me sick)
But dry sockets are your worst enemy, use heavy amts of saltwater with the curved syringe they give you and flush hourly. I did that and still got dry sockets. Very painful. They gave me talwin but good luck, you'll prob. get vicodin, beg for lots.Be firm but nice. Good luck. j

I have never had more than 2 pulled at once. I am one of the fortunate ones, I never recieved my lower wisdom teeth. Therefore never having a need for removal. I did have to have the 2 upper pulled out & was happy to have it done because they were cutting my muscle & gums every day I put it off. The pre-removal anxiety was far worse than the proceedure. Anyhow, my upper molars came out with extreme ease & I was eating normally after the novicane wore off. Afterwards the pain was very minimal. The actual removal was painless. Mine were not impacted & the roots were tapered like a carrot so the extraction was simple. It actually was kinda wierd because I could actually hear the tearing noise as they were ripped from my head because they were so close to my ears. Still, I had to ask when he was done because I could not feel it at all. Hope for that. I know others are not as simple as mine was.

Not the most pleasant experience of my life..They will tell you, that you will be back to normal in a few days..Well mine were impacted and it takes about a good 3 to 4 wks for your mouth to feel normal again..As for the pain, the Tylox given to me took away my appetite so I didn't eat much..Just soups..Good luck..Don't envy you..But on the + side you never have to go through it again.

OUCH!
I had all four cut out when I was 17 or 18, they started coming in, and were beginning to mess up my $3000 orthadontics! My cheeks swelled up like a chipmunk and turned all kinds of pretty colors. I was in a lot of pain!
However I've known people that get them pulled and go eat Taco Bell a few hours later... so go figure! The oral surgeon will most likely prescribe something for you. You might request Percocet, and let them know that Lortabs haven't been working well for the pain.
Good luck!!
