I am hoping someone out there has studied up on this topic.
I have been using high doses of hydrocodone for my pain issues for about two years. I have been trying to stop taking it and used Xanax to wean off but I ended up addicted to Xanax and those w/d symptoms are so much more horrid. YUCK!!
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I checked into a hospital for detox. I was given Buprenex and Phenobarbital IV for that. I came home and looked at my calender and my period is so late!
On cycle day 22 i had break through bleeding. On cycle day 25, I went into detox. My pregnancy test that day was negative. Then I came home and realized the dates and now is day 40 and I'm still testing negative but lateness is not normal.
My dh and I don't use protection in hopes of conceiving again and it would GREAT incentive to stay off narcotics now if i were pg BUT....don't know....probably just messed up because of hydro...
Anyone else have similar things happen or know about this? Thanks!!!

Just from personal experience, while I was on opiates I always had irregular periods. I've been off of them now since July and have been regular ever since.
HTH ease your mind some! The bupe is pretty strong. Are you still on it? Maybe just give your body some time to adjust back to normal and get all the drugs out of your system. It would be better for you health and baby's health in the long run.
Good luck.

Yes, the same thing is happening to me. My periods have been screwed up since I started with the hydro. I also will break out in horrible sweating, which I know is a sign of hydro use or menopause. They say I'm not in meno. yet, but I can go 3-4 months without a period.

My periods have been screwed up from my normal since I have been on hydro regular. They good thing is that it is now every 28 days like clockwork, where it used to vary a few days. Also, my cycle only lasts 2 days. Aceteminophen delays menstrual cycles and lessens blood flow. Last century, new brides used large doses on APAP on their honeymoon to delay periods.

I have read in literature that hydro does cause menstrual irregularities but never read anything about acetaminophen doing that!
I am 19 days late!
On the HoneyMoon note...i learned in rehab/treatment that the "honey" "moon" was aptly named due to the fact that a certain natural form of honey contains alcohol or an alcohol-like substance that intoxicates. A newly married couple would go away together for a full lunar cycle (moon) and eat this intoxicating honey...thus the HoneyMoon....

Narcotic meds can can cause menses irregularities, I haven't had a cycle since I have been 17, I'm 28 now. I asked my doc and he said that pain meds wills cause irregularites be that my problem is caused by severe endometriosis and damage from the laser surgery I had when I was 17 . So if your cycle does not return definatly go to the doc. If your not using mass amounts of narcotics you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

Thanks DWS...i was using alot of hydro..about 300-400 mg a day for the past six months but have been on it chronically for about two years. It was only recently that my tolerance became so great and then I went to detox/rehab to stop the insanity. Now since being off for 25 days, it's weird (!) My periods were quite regular on the narcotic but now that I have stopped, the period is not starting...that and the fact that my dh and I do NOT use birth control in hopes of conceiving son #3 some day...????

Maybe you are pregnant, I always thought that I would have children but I was told when i was 17 that it would be impossible. At least you have stopped taking the hydro I know that narcotics can cause problems during pregnancy. I will have to be on pain meds untill the fda approves disk replacment surgery. I want to stop takimg pain meds but every time i do the pain is just unbearable after a couple of days i have to start my meds again. Was it hard to come off of your meds? Did they give you anything for w/drawl? I have a heart condition so it is dangerous for me to just stop taking oxy. Even my doc tells me to stay on it, he said that i need it. Personally I would rather be off of it I am sick of running out every month and always having to see my doc every month. Tolerance is definatly a problem, i have been on oxycontin since 1998 in fact I participated in a drug study for Purdue they had me on 5 160mg oxys a day. of course that strength was dropped. It took me 2 years to lower my tolerance to a resonable level and I can't seem to lower it any more that it is now any recomendations?

Well, I went into detox on cycle day 25 and that day my preg test was negative. I came home on cycle day 36 and realized how late i really was and that preg test was also negative..(???) My dh really doesn't think i am preggo at this time but if i am, cool..if not, cool. Now me, i want to know ASAP!! And I have gained lots of weight recently coming off the meds as well. I look like I am definitely preggo! Oh well....
The hospital I went to for detox used a combination of Buprenex IV for narcotic w/d and phenobarb IV for that as well as benzo w/d sx (i was also coming off Xanax in a very bad way). After 3 days of IV meds, I went on a phenobarb taper of pills by mouth until off...
I can easily do narcotic w/d at home using Imodium (and did that many many times) but I was also using some Xanax but I (unfortunately) became tolerant to Xanax and didn't even realize it until I was bouncing off the walls going crazy. I HAD to medically detox off that sh**.
I did meet some cool people in the hosp with pain problems who were both taking 600-750 mg of Oxy daily for pain...yikes. Buprenex does take the edge off...

Thanks for the info. Right now I am out of meds as usual and boy that imodium is needed in a big way. Thank god for it! The problem I have and my doc agrees is that I can not go off of my meds b/c I will barley be able to walk. I also take zanax and soma and hydo for break through pain. The zanax has not caused withdrawl problems yet i seem to be able to go off of it with no problem other than panic type feelings for the first day. Why can't the phamacutical companies come up w/ a good pain med that isn't a steroid or anti inflamitory since they cause soo many liver problems not to mention stomach ulcers if you use them long enough I ende up with a bleeding stomach ulcer. Narcotics pose such a problem because once you are on them nothing else works. I can/t believe that my doc will not let me go off of my pain meds but he said that I do not have any alternative at the moment. There isn't a surgery out there that can fix me. Besides I allready had back surgery it didn't work. I have had painful conditions since I have been 10 years old. I used to get migraines w/ seizures for three days straight. Then I got endometriosis and then my sinal contition, then cervical cancer when I was 18 and now i found out that I have marfan's syndrom a connective tissue disorder that effects the heart. i will eventually have to have aortic replaement surgery. Boy am I tried of all this sh#$. It is one thing after another I'm 28 what more can happen at this point! I guess I really shoundn't ask that question I might get the answer! There are soo many people that are far worse off, I shouldn't complain. I have a friend that has ALS, so i should count my prayers and just suck it up and deal with it! Good luck with getting pregnant. It's funny you said that you gained weight after going off of narcotics I lose weight when I go off of them I lose my apetite when I am in pain.

QUICK UPDATE!! Not that I want to shout it out to the world, but I finally got my period today. It was ONLY 25 days late. I'm not pregnant this time but maybe sometime soon. That's ALWAYS an incentive to stay chemical-free (!!) Weird that I have always had regular cycles on hydro, high dose hydro that is! But stopping hydro completely made it all go whack!!
Just FYI i guess! Thanks for the input everyone!

I have never had a menstrual problem while on hydro...but that's not saying it can't happen to someone else. Mine have always been normal while I take it BUT they have gone askew whenever I have gone through withdrawals!
I think the w/d throws my body so out of whack that it messes up my cycles. Even if I go through only a few days of w/d before it's time for my period, I can count on my period being late or early and crappier than usual!

Just a thought, but it has been my experience that whenever you deny your body something that it is used to having, your body deals with it in very odd ways. That may be a reason for the menstrual cycle delays. Just your bodys way of saying "Hey where is that chemical I am used to having?". I truely hope that you are able to stay narcotic free. You have actually given me some hope, just reading your random posts. Thanks and good luck.
