I have a friend who has chronic pain from a work-related accident she suffered a few years ago and numerous surgeries. She goes to a pain-management clinic for methadone, Lorcet, and soma. (She has no problem getting two pain meds filled at the same pharmacy, I guess Lorcet is for breakthrough pain). She also sees a regular physician who prescribes Lorcet also and Xanax. She told me she gets them filled at two different pharmacies. One with disability insurance, one with no insurance. She's on SS disability and has to use the insurance card or else she'll lose her benefits. She swears three people have told her that beginning Jan. 1, La. will join the states that use the prescription drug monitoring database program. I told her, I have never heard that. She says she has to go to two doctors to get adequate pain relief and fears from what she was told, La. is next and she would have to drop one doctor for fear of being found out. I have searched all over the internet for her and could find nothing indicating Louisiana would institute a statewide prescription database. I suggested she tell the pain management clinic, what she's getting is not adequate. But they tell her that they can't prescribe her any more. Anyway, this is what I found from the DEA's own website:
States with existing programs: CA, HI, ID, IL, IN, KY, MASS, MI, NV, NY, OK, PA, RI TX, UT, VA, WA, WV
States with new programs: AL, IA, MA, MS, NM, TN, WY
States that received grants but haven't started a program:
CT, FL, KS, NJ, NC, OH, OR, SC
Has anyone heard different? This info was posted on the website on Nov. 1 2004. Is Louisiana considering starting up a program? I found there is an idea being kicked around of a national database, but is strongly opposed by the AMA. Doctors do not want to be told by LE how to treat their patients' pain just like I'm sure LE don't want to be told by non-LE how to do their job. Sure, there are some people that go doctor shopping, but so what? Why should the gov't control what you put in your body. The land of the free, the pursuit of happiness??? The ability to be pain-free? That's what I thought this country was all about.

With Ashcroft on the way out of the Dept. of Justice, maybe things will get better. I'm no liberal, but he is just too far to the right for me.
