I thought about it a lot and am awaiting the recall for the Celebrex I purchased. I want to avoid that whole class of drugs COX1 and 2 inhibitors. What is a good occasionally used arthritis, back, sciatica pain med? Tramadol? I can't take too much ibuprofen, voltaren etc due to ulcer. What works for you?
Thanks

Can't get it online (or not that I've seen), but have you tried Lodine? Always worked for me.

Thanks but Lodine is an NSAID and not good with ulcers. I think I will just stretch more and move to a warm climate.

How about Mobic? It's an anti-inflammatory that came out around the same time as Celebrex, Vioxx and Bextra, but it's not a cox 2 inhibitor and, hopefully, will not be found to have the dangerous side effects that Vioxx has. Mobic is an nsaid, but so are Celebrex, Vioxx, and Bextra, so if you were able to tolerate Celebrex, the Mobic should be no problem.
I have tried all of the above mentioned medications and Mobic is the only one that continued to work for me and I've been taking it over a year now. It's worth checking in to.
Hope this helps -

Unless you're willing to go the hydro route, Advil is your best bet.

They're ALL nsaids. NSAID stands for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Lodine is one of the safer ones for ulcers.

Sorry to disagree, but Lodine is one of the worst. It scalds your esophagus going down, and then it explodes into a fire bomb in an already-scared ulcer-ridden stomach. It
took me three days to get over one Lodine. I never take any of the old arthritis medicines for that reason.

What about Arthrotec? This is an NSAID combined with something to help prevent ulcers.

Do some more searching on google about more about Arthrotec.

My hubby went to the doctor yesterday to get a new med to replace vioxx and got celebrex.....his pcp told him "try this until they take it off the market too"
he wasted his time & $$ IMO. I agree that advil would be a better choice, however I don't know anything about mobic...... my 2 cents! Hope

I spoke to a pharmacist and she said that she expects all the vioxx type drugs to be recalled eventually and the next choice will be either the old NSAIDS with Prevacid for gastric protection or opioid pain meds depending on your condition.

I have tried this medicine and actually it worked quite well but the stomach upset was awful!! My Dr had told me to take it 2x per day but I can only handle it about once every 2 days and even at that dose it does seem to help. The swelling in my knee from the ahritis went down alot after a few days of taking it. If only they could find something that that works that you can actually stomach would be wonderful!!

Zip,
I have severe arthritis in my left knee. I've tried a bunch of different drugs...Vioxx, Celebrex, Mobic, Bextra...with little or no success. My doctor is pushing me to have knee replacement surgery, which I am NOT prepared to do yet.
I started doing some research and looking into non-prescription meds. A lot of the info I've read says that drugs like Vioxx and Celebrex have never been proven any more effective than ibuprofen.
I also did some research on Glucosamine and Chondroitin (both are dietary supplements). What I found sounded very promising.
So I started taking ibuprofen and Glucosamine/Chondroitin (Glu/Chon is sold in combination). I won't say the result has been amazing but it's pretty durn close. I didn't notice any improvement right away but after several weeks, my knee slowly began to feel better. It's my belief the Glu/Chon is mostly responsible for the change in my condition but I think ibuprofen helps, too.

I recently started taking the generic version of "Relafen" and it works great and hasn't burned a hole in my stomach either. My doctor has me taking 1000mg/day of this stuff and my back doesn't hurt all of the time.

My pain management doc and I have worked out a deal. I'm just saying that if you do not have a good gastro profile, almost all of the arthritis drugs are intolerable. But, I guess you would have to try them to know for sure. I have a long painful history of ulcers - in the end, bleeding ulcers.
