Traveling to Cozumel
      #198859 - 11/08/04 07:37 AM

I was reading some old posts and found a thread about purchasing meds from Mexico but for the life of me I can't find it again so...I'm starting a new one.

My sister and I are leaving from Galveston on a cruise to Cozumel and I am interested in purchasing some meds while there. Mainly what I am looking for is antibiotics, Nubain, and Xanax. Does anyone know what the proper procedure is for obtaining these meds or can you still even do it? The last time I was in Mexico I just walked over the border from Loredo and they had people standing there asking the Americans if they needed to go to a pharmacy. And at the time the doctors were on the staff of the pharmacy so it was no big deal.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I sure don't want to end up in a Mexican jail!

This is my very general take: Mexican law requires you to have a mexican doctor's prescription. They're easy to come by. Many pharmacies work with a doctor.

Of course, they'll just sell to you without. But if you're caught by policia with them, they can put you in jail, unless you offer to settle the issue on the spot.

Getting them back here is another issue.

This is about what my experience has been, the biggest deal wouldn't be the Mexican cops. Usually in areas frequently occupied by tourists you can buy your way out of most petty stuff. The American authorities wouldn't offer that chance.

Also keep in mind that because you are going to a touristy place in Mexico, the cost of seeing a doctor and getting a script filled might very well take you close to the cost of using an IOP, if not exceed it.

Thank you so much for your replies. Like you said, it may just be easier to get these from an IOP.

At any rate, I can also buy some killer vanilla!
