Does anyone here have experience with both of these meds to post an opinion. I might have to utilize the MS Contin for breakthrough pain when the hyrdo just isn't doing it. Was wondering what the conversion would be from MS Contin to hydro. How about a conversion of MS Contin to Oxycodone/Oxycontin? Thanks.

I have used both. I think mscontin is not what you want for breakthrough pain. Because it is time released. Immediate release morphine would be better. Here is a url with a good narcotic conversion chart.. http://www.globalrph.com/narcoticonv.htm

Can grapefruit be used to supress the excretion of the enzyme that deactivates hydro? Does the time release help or delay the breakdown of the MS?

80mg hydro orally = 10mg morphine IV/IM = 40-80mg morphine orally. the range is due to the fact that the first pass filtration in the liver before bloodstream is metabolism dependant. OxyC 15mg IV/IM = 10mg morph IV/IM,
Typically equil doses or OxyC and morphine orally will show that the OXy is more effective and is not cleared by the liver before blood. i.e. a 40mg oxy wil lbe at least as effective as a 80mg MS CONTIN tablet.
BE CAREFUL both OXYCOTIN and MS CONTIN are available in doses that are deadly in non-opiate dependent people. as little as QTY 3 80mg OXYC or MSCONTIN can cause death.

Rockystuart 3 OC80 would probably kill a narcotic tolerant person .I have been taking oxycontin for several years now and will not take more than 40 mg .I have had too many friends OD from them and I am not about to commit suicide .
Back to the topic ,just from my personal experience with MS Contin and Hydrocodone .A 30mg MS Contin is not much stronger than a 10 mg hydro with one exception the MS Contin lasts up to 12 hrs vs 4 to 6 for the hydro .A person would have to take 2 to 3 10 mg hydrocone in the same time frame that they took 1 30 mg MS Contin to provide the equivlant pain relief .But that is my personal experience and may be different with someone else that has a different tolerance than me .

Harley thats what the WARNING said! but lethal doses are like a bell curve - at leathal dose 1/2 die. But I've always been at the bleeding edge of any bell curve
I agree on teh hydro MSCONTIN - but I take higher doses of hydro. the purple people eaters (100mg time rel morph) are about = to 4 hydro 10's every 4 hours. the morph lasts 8-10 hours for me.

hi,
i have used both and can tell you from personal experience that usually the doctors prescribe a long acting time release like ms contin 1-2 x's daily and use a short acting med like hydro for break through pain as opposed to the other way around.
ms contin 30 mg three times a day controlled my pain better and more consistently than 10-12 10 mg hydros.
everybody is different. some people just like one more than the other.(or the buzz appeal of one or the other) the narcotic conversion charts are correct chemically. one 30 mg morphine time release is equivalent to more like two hydro 10s, and it lasts 8-10 hours pretty well.
the most important thing though, is that you aren't murdering your liver with all that acetaminophen.(tylenol)
good luck, you might just have to experiment with them yourself until you find the right balance.

Rockystuart ,sounds like your tolerance is about like mine .The morphine does not last for 12 hours for me either and really more like 6 to 8 hours tops .Probably more like six .Sometimes they might do me like that .I really can not compare them that well anyway because I never had any hydro to take the last several times I had the morphine .I usally just take 1 or 2 of the MS 30 mg at a time .
Sorry if we had a disagreement on the oxy .I was in a bad mood when I was posting the other nite .Three OC80,S at one time would definately kill me .Maybe not you ,but they would for sure kill me .
