Hydro and anxiety
      #196982 - 10/29/04 12:29 PM

As all of us Hydro takers, we know the med itself has a calming property. 2 months ago, I had my first panic/anxiety attack. At the time, I did not know what it was, I thought I was having a heart attack. I felt a sudden rush of tingling sensation go threw my head, hard to breathe and both of my hands went numb and could not swallow.
I remember, right before I had the attack, I took a hydro for my cervical sprine.
So I stop the hydro for 2 months. Today, my neck was acting up so bad, I broke down and took a hydro. A 1/2 hr later, I had a full blown anxiety attack, this time with my legs in tremers, felt almost like I was having a seizure. I went to the E.R. I told the doc what I took, and he gave me a xanax and everything was back to normal again.
Has anyone experience this....Please share your stories w/me cause I feel like I'm going crazy.

I have anxiety d/o and have found that the hydro helps with it. Do you think you may have had a bad reaction to the med? What did the doctors say?

The doc told me everyone reacts differently to meds, but i have taken hydros for my tooth, root canals, broken bones in the past. This is just very recent thats why I'm confused.

Hello,
Feeling like your losing your mind is also a classic symptom of a Panic Disorder.
However, I don't know which came first, the meds set it off or your prone to them and the meds aggravated it.
I have the same reaction to the Hydro and have to always take an ativan with it. Otherwise, I will have a full blown panic attack and they're scary!
Along time ago, before I had any anxiety at all, my physician prescribed me Percodan for pain, and that night I took it at bedtime, only to jump out of bed an hour later in a full blown panic, I tried to calm myself, I didn't have any antianxiety meds so I ended up having a few beers to calm it. It was my first experience with meds setting off a panic attack. I couldn't take the pain med unless I had a few beers first, even though they say don't drink with it, but it was that or suffer in real pain.
Some docs will think your crazy and act like they have never heard of such reactions with pain meds, but beleive me, you are definetly not alone with this symptom.
I also now take an antidepressant to keep this under control, but when I take the hydro I have to take the antianxiety med without exception.
Hydro seems to irritate my nerves, not calm them. I don't get sleepy, I get active and my mind races.
It's a pain in the butt!
YOUR NOT LOSING YOUR MIND! It's just the chemical imbalance sending wrong messages to you as I was told by my doc. The messages aren't real. You are normal.
Feel free to PM me anytime.

Beepertgirl,

My sister and I both take hydro for a spinal disorder. We both have the same type of reaction as you do. It makes me very nervous and she sometimes gets so bad her throat constricts horribly. We both have the same problem with other meds, even benadryl! It helps us to take the hydro with some type of muscle relaxant (I prefer Soma), to keep from feeling like jumping out of our skin. Sometimes you wonder which is worse, the pain or the heart racing feeling the medication gives you! I guess everyone's body is different, because most meds that make others drowsy make us feel really jumpy. I'm sorry that you have the problem, but just wanted to let you know that there are more of us out here. You are not alone! Weird....

Take care,

bb123

I just find it so weird that it never used to happen to me, but all the sudden if I take hydro now, I will have a panic/anxiety attack. I can't believe I even went to the E.R and told them I thought I was having a heart attack, how embarrassing.
Thanks to everyone, I dont feel so weird anymore.

I think hydro effects everyone a little differently. some ppl it wires them out, others has the calming effect. But I also wonder liek that other poster said: which is the REAL problem? do you have anxiety and the hydro just set it off or is the hydro the inital cause of the anxiety. maybe you got a real potent bottle of hydro this time? I dont know. I do know I HATE ANXIETY!!!! ahha it's the worst good luck!

Yes, I do agree with the above poster that Hydro, or Opiates in general, obviously do effect each user differently. For me sometimes actually tends to wake me up and make it hard to sleep when taken just before bed, and others on occasion just the opposite and makes me slightly drowsy . I also get occasional anxiety and Hydro sometimes tends to help somewhat, and others it almost seems as if it invokes a light Anxiety Attack. Weird!

I do not like when I must take Xanax with my Norco, obviously not very clear headed at those times....Good thing my anxiety issues are not all that frequent, but always have to make sure I have it with me, just in case...
