Soma Vs. Flexeril
      #194612 - 10/18/04 06:08 PM

Hey, I would've posted this in the appropriate forum, but I couldn't for some reason, so here it is.
I've never taken muscle relaxers before (besides valium) and I've got a severely strained back. My co-worker suggested flexeril - she's used it before for injuries. Another friend of mine suggested soma, but I don't know if he's even ever really had any injuries. Does anyone have experience with both? Which one is better and in what ways? I guess I would add a poll, but I haven't posted much so I don't know how, wait, maybe I do. So here it is: Flexeril or Soma

Also, please post any reasons why you prefer one over the other, along with potentiating effects of benzodiazepines or opiate analgesics.

so which is it...........
Soma Vs. Flexeril
You may choose only one
Soma (Carisoprodol)
Flexeril (Cyclobenzaprine)

I've never taken either one of those but I got this off of a website in the off chance that it may be of a little help.

SOMA:

Carisoprodol, a muscle relaxant, is used with rest, physical therapy, and other measures to relax muscles and relieve pain and discomfort caused by strains, sprains, and other muscle injuries.

Although side effects from carisoprodol are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

* drowsiness
* dizziness
* clumsiness
* headache
* fast heart rate
* upset stomach
* vomiting
* skin rash

If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:

* difficulty breathing
* fever
* weakness
* burning in the eyes

FLEXERIL:

What is cyclobenzaprine?
• Cyclobenzaprine is a muscle relaxant. It works by blocking nerve impulses (or pain sensations) that are sent to your brain.
• Cyclobenzaprine is used to relieve pain, tenderness, and limitation of motion caused by muscle spasms. It is used, along with rest and physical therapy, for short-term treatment (i.e., 2 to 3 weeks).
• Cyclobenzaprine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

•If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking cyclobenzaprine and seek emergency medical attention:
·an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives);
· seizures, hallucinations, or confusion;
· blurred vision;
· increased heart rate; or
· depression.
•Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take cyclobenzaprine and talk to your doctor if you experience
· drowsiness or dizziness;
· dry mouth or a bad taste in your mouth;
· insomnia;
· difficulty urinating; or
· sweating.
•If you stop taking this medication suddenly, you may experience some withdrawal effects.
•Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome

Hope this wasn't too reiterative.

flexiril taken at night makes me feel so drowsy and out of it even the next day. it's been awhile since i have taken this med, so i cannot describe any more detail. with soma- i don't get any weird feelings the next day like i did with flexiril, and while on the med, i was capable of thinking and functioning normally- so no unpleasant side effects at all. this of course varies from person to person, but i hated flexiril so much that when i went to a walk-in clinic for horrible pulled muscles in my chest that were very painful, i didn't even fill the flex script they gave me, i'd rather deal with the pain for a couple days than feel like that again.

Flexeril completely knocks me out! Soma not so much. I strained my neck and my doctor gave me flexeril. I took 2 thinking that an extra dose would help the pain and I slept for 16 hours. So I've been taking a quarter at night when my neck hurts but it still leaves me with a hangover the next day. The strange thing is that my friend takes flexeril and doesn't feel a thing. One good thing I can say about it is that it totally cured my neck pain.
