Benzos and 10-panel GC/MS drug test
      #190718 - 10/04/04 01:21 PM

Does anyone know if specific benzos show-up on these tests?

For example, if you take Xanax and Valium.. will the test indicate both Valium and Xanax usage? Thanks.

Hey, got another question about testing on Xanax's if you can help. My cousin's boyfriend has been taking 2mg Xanax for the past 5 or 6 days, last night was the last one he took and he has a drug test on Thursday. Will these be out of his system by then and if not what can he do to get it out of him? He is small build. Thank you!!!!!

I can tell you this. Everytime I've taken a UA - and it varies from one month to 'right on the spot', I've always tested positive for benzos(Xanax). Flush drink, no flush drink, exercise, no exercise, etc..Of course I've been on a therapeutic dosage for quite some time.

Benzos rank right up there with THC in that they are detectable for a long time. I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear. However, if the test he takes is a 5 panel EMIT (common for employment because of the low cost), they don't test for it. Please let us know.. Regards,

D-

This is only my experience, but here goes...I was given a random at work a few months ago. My employer knew that I had severe back problems, and had just come back from medical leave (anybody else smell a setup?)and I had had radio frequency nerve ablasion done 10 days before. I told them I had a script for Klonopin and Hydro, but the test came back showing both Klonopin AND Valium! Initially, I simply had no explanation for it...but then I remembered that when I had the nerve ablasion procedure I received IV sedation. I am SURE that that is where the Valium came from, since I hadn't taken any, and the stuff can stay in your system for up to 6 weeks! I tried explaining this to them, but to no avail. I was referred to a drug treatment center (while I was still under the care of a pain management specialist mind you)and told that I had to go off all of my meds in order to keep my job! Ua tests are SUCH BS if they are trying to hang somebody, because it doesn't prove that I was under the influence on the job,(i MOST DEFINITELY WASN'T) just that it was detected in my urine...which with hydro can be up to 36 hours, and benzos much longer. Needless to say, I told them to take their job, and their 'treatment plan' and shove it!

Wow...Now that has me concerned again because Klonopin and Valium are both benzos. I had asked about this same test on whether or not it could differentiate between what benzos you are taken..ie what will be displayed in the results. The reponse I received was that this test will not indicate specific drug usage, rather only the class/family of which the drug is in. We could sure use a subject matter expert on this one for sure. The basic NIDA5 will not show a positive for benzo's but they can add it as an expanded test and generally they test for the NIDA5 plus 1 or two on the expanded (depending on how much money they want to spend and if they are looking for something in particular.

The standard 5 are
# Cannabinoids (marijuana, hash)
# Cocaine (cocaine, crack, benzoylecognine)
# Amphetamines (amphetamines, methamphetamines, speed)
# Opiates (heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)
# Phencyclidine (PCP)

Expanded are
# Barbiturates (Phenobarbital, Secobarbitol, Butalbital)
# Hydrocodone (Lortab, Vicodin)
# Methaqualone (Qualuudes)
# Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Librium, Serax, Rohypnol)
# Methadone
# Propoxyphene (Darvon compounds)
# Ethanol (Alcohol)
# MDMA (Ecstasy)

If you fail the standard then the test is confirmed with a GCMS and with that test it can pinpoint the exact drug. (just like a hair test)

The idea is to past the first cheaper test since once you test positive for that they must confirm it with the more expensive GCMS test

I have failed once on Valium and not Hydro and another time I have failed on Hydro and not Xanax. It depends on what box they check when you sign the form.

However, if you fail for a legal drug all you need to do is prove you have a script for it by photocopy of the bottle, phone calls to the Dr are not allowed and you actually prove you have the script with the Dr who works for the testing company before the results are supplied to your employer or PO.

So if I've taken both Valium and Xanax.. Will the 10-panel GCMS indicate this on the report???? ie... tested positive for "Valium" and "Xanax" or will it just say "Benzodiazepines". The test I take is a 10-panel.. not the 5-panel. This is causing me anxiety because I have a script for Xanax, but the Valium has lapsed and so I do not currently have a script for that. I figured since the Xanax triggers a benzo positive, I can provide that script no problem. However, if it comes back with both.. I'm SOL.

Comes back as Benzo's, I've never seen them send back reports saying anything but just Benzo's present in system.

They more than likely wouldn't spend the money to do that...as I said, in my case, I feel it was a setup because they knew I had ongoing back issues and had become a liability to them. They were LOOKING for a reason to nail me. But it CAN be done, is all I'm saying...trust me, I'm now working a job at 2/3 the pay of what I was before..

I have posted about tests and benzos. They can definitely be distinguished! I was specifically asked about valium when I had only listed xanax and klonopin. Now they want proof of Rx for the valium, which I do not have (this is for pre-employment).I don't know what to do!
