Sigh - we're talking about benzos here, not Tagamet. Here's what you said:
"thats an EZ question. no need for long replies. the answer very simply is tagamet. tagamet inhibits CYP2D6 and incrases blood levels and extends the already enormus half-life of valium. i recommend against it and grapfruit juice. to potentiate, raise your dose, that way you raise the strenth without raising the half life or disabling detox mechanisms."
Tagamet's effects on benzo metabolism are on the 3A4 enzyme; 2D6 has nothing to do with it. Grapefruit juice also inhibits CYP3A4, so it's part of the "answer", too. Anything else you want to add? If you're thinking preemptively, Tagamet also inhibits CYP1A2, a minor pathway for acetominophen metabolism, and CYP2C19, a minor pathway for Valium metabolism.
Try PubMed for more info than a product sheet. And not just the abstracts, either.

I don't mean to interrupt this, I just wanted to say thanks for these kind of threads, and the thought you folks obviously put behind them.
There are obviously a lot of good threads and good people on this board, and this thread is just all the more proof.
Thanks to those of you who read and share with us so we can all learn.

tagemet inhibits both and is contradicted with valium. it extends the half life and increase blood levels. Tagamet is cimetidine.
Quote:
Cimetidine, Estrogen-Containing Oral Contraceptives, Disulfiram and Erythromycin: Concurrent use of these inhibits hepatic metabolism (oxidation) of diazepam and therefore delays its elimination and increases diazepam plasma concentrations.

Yes, Tagamet works on the 3A4 and the 2D6 enzymes, but 2D6 does not work on benzos. 3A4 works on benzos. That's the point of the thread. Sheesh. I was correcting YOUR specific answer about benzos; I don't know why you're trying to change the subject by noting that Tagamet also works on 2D6. 2D6 is, however, important to some opiates. Read my post on Tagamet's inhibition of 2D6 and its effects on hydro on this thread:

I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

Can someone speak to the effect of estrogen taken at the same time as a benzo?
I'm taking 10 mg estadiol 2x day and an occaisional benzo. Am I just increasing the half life of the benzo?

I'm confused about this grapefruit juice statement.
I thought I had read on some other threads that grapefruit juice should be specifically avoided with Xanax, as it was somehow dangerous, even indicating there were often warning labels on the Xanax rx bottles.
Is this accurate, and if so, is the impact different with other Benzos such as Diazepam, Lorazepam, and clonazepam?
Just curious if anyone knows.
the inserts in Valium scripts say to avoid grapefruit juice is all i know
