blood work question
      #194507 - 10/18/04 06:31 AM

I have to have blood work taken, not for a drug test, just to see if my levels of medication are still working. I'm looking at the script, I'm getting a CBC, BMP, LFTs, TSH, Amylar(?), Lyrase(?), FreeT4(?) and a depakote level (sorry I'm not sure if all of those are spelled right, had a little trouble reading the doc's handwriting). Does anyone know if me taking hydro will show up in those tests? I'm just getting over a really bad cold and was taking cough medicine with hydro in it so I think I should be able to say that's why it is there, but I still would like to know before hand if it is going to show up so I am prepared for the doctor visit. Thanks guys!

No. Your DR. won't know you were taking it unless you tell him. None of those tests will indicate you were taking hydro. Good luck!

hi sweetie,

i have to concur with uniden and beeper (ya gotta love those sns!) the blood tests are only going to check for what they indicate, and nothing more. i wouldn't worry about a thing! good luck tho'.

cheers, c.(angel)

Hi -

Here's a breakdown of what tests your doc ordered in layman's terms -
CBC - complete blood count
BMP - basic metabolic panel
LFT - liver function tests
TSH - thyroid stimulating hormone
Amylase & Lipase - tests for pancreatic disorders
Free T4 - another thryoid test
Depakote level - speaks for itself

And everyone is correct - none of those tests will show hydro so you're safe. Hope all of your results are favorable!!

Take care

LFTs (liver function tests) are a good to have checked annually if you take tylenol regularly.

Good luck.

Sam

So would that show if I have been taking too much tylenol then, given the fact that the hydro is mixed with APAP? Does anyone know what a normal/admormal level is. Thanks again for everyone's help. I have the doctor's appt on Thursday. And it is my psych doctor-hence the depakote level (bipolar disorder) so she does not know I am taking hydro of course.

Probally not. It just shows how healthy your liver is. Alot of anti-depressants, i.e. Paxil can damage liver over period of time. You Psych is just testing to see if it is functioning properly.

I am goign to a local clinic today for the "working poors" w/o insurance. I will be able to get MRi's etc. cheaper and see docs for free. do you think they'll do a tox screen for me to be able to get these benefits? I dont have any hydro in me. My valium in my system is written from local Dr. so there wont be any q's there. but there might be a little THC in there which of course I dont have a script for lol. I am betting they're gonna DT me. any thouhgts? any personal experiences?

All I can say is I work in a hospital and the only or most common drug test is the pee in the cup. Not by blood. I work in a detox unit in a hospital. The only lab we do to screen thru blood work is for BAL. blood alcohol level. We order drug screens on almost 95% of the patients who come thru the door. And it is always done by peeing on a cup. And if your asked to do that, inquire why or what it is for. They have to tell you it is the law. Tests cannot be done unless you agree or they are court ordered by a judge.

i think i lucked out. b4 going in I managed to find one of the Chairman of the boards for the hospital/university which oversees the clinic. SO she took sympathy for my situation. I only waited like 10 minuntes at a free clinic i couldnt beleive it! everyone else was waiting for hours. then I got in there: one of my best friends/paintball teammates/workout buddy was doing his 1 night of work there for nursing school and I was nto tested and was in & out REAL fast. everyone else in the waiting room was eyeballing me lol I then went next door tot he pharmacy and they were all mad had been waiting for ever. they told me I better forget about the Art presentation I was supposed to go to b/c i would be waiting forever. I had my meds within like 3 minuntes! haha anyways it all worked out good.!!!!!!

thanx for the info!

steve,

I know that this post is after the fact for you (and congratulations) about tox screen for receiving government assistance (free clinic). Most of the time the government is a mystery to me but they wouldn't routinely do a drug screen to determine eligibility for receiving assistance unless there were specific issues with substance abuse (I don't think). Also, on some of the routine drug screens, hydro doesn't show up unless they are looking for it specifically because it is a synthetic. Take care . . .

steve,

You are more than welcome. I have been a nurse since Noah's Ark and have acquired tons of useless trivia and some good info over the years. I am happy to inflict any of it on you that you want, lol. Take care . . .
