Just went to a pain clinic today about better managing my pain meds b/c of various conditions, and i discussed withdrawl with him. he gave me a clonidine patch to wear and i've had it on for about 8 hours and haven't noticed much help. he did say it could take a day or two to really work, but im not entirely sure what i am supposed to feel better about. does anyone have any info on the patch, how much help it is by itself? i go back to my doc in two days so im sure i can report more then, but if anyone's 'been there, done that' and can share with me what to expect or if it will help, what i'll feel, etc. that would be soooo helpful.
thank you all for your time and help! i appreciate it with all my heart!

Having "soo been there" and done that, your doc is right--it does take a couple of days to kick in. One of the first things I noticed was "dry mouth" when the patch started to kick in. How much better you'll feel depends on what kind of meds/dosage you are decreasing or withdrawing from. Feel free to PM me.

Still don't really notice much - don't have dry mouth or anything yet. But it's only been a little over 24 hours. Are there benefits to the patch over the pill or vice versa? How does it help if its a bp med? And what, if any, symptoms will it help with? I've researched a lot more about this on the rest of the board, but there hasn't been much said as to what it will help with (maybe b/c its dependant on the person?) and there was nothing much about the patch. I was hoping to hear some more of that grand ole advice that db is known for. Thanks for the info so far!

Clonidine is an alpha adrenergic receptor agonist (the particular receptor it works on actually inhibits further adrenaline activity, so acting on this receptor slows down the adrenergic response - that's why it's a blood pressure med, too). It should lessen the hot/cold sweats you get and the general tightness that your muscles do when you're in withdrawal. Basically, it inhibits the adrenaline part of your withdrawal response. Please continue to keep us posted on your experience! You could give more specific answers than me, since I'm just a pharmacologist and have little experience with clonidine.
