Soma Vs. Flexeril
      #194667 - 10/19/04 12:03 AM

everyone is affected so differently by the various types of meds out there, it would be hard to gauge how you will react based on the experience of others. for example, in my case, between flexeril and soma i would choose soma hands down. it does reduce the spasms in my back and, though it really doesn't ease my pain, there are relatively few side effects and no hangover. flexeril, on the other hand, imo, is the absolute worst medication i have ever taken in my life. i was rx-ed it once (i forget the mg.) and was told that i could take 2 to start, then reduce my dose to one at a time. i don't think i woke up for three days after having taken the initial dose and i felt far worse than just having back pain! i was hung over for days! months later, when i messed up my back again to the point of absolute desperation, i stupidly thought i could get away with taking half of a flexeril, as that was the only thing i had available at the time. big mistake! again, i felt as if i was going to die for several days. but then again, my doctor tried once to get me to take ativan daily, but that also wrecked me. obviously, some people can handle flexeril as it's still on the market. personally, i would rather drink arsenic.

oh, another note about flexeril.... my next-door neighbor has had a couple of back surgeries. we have different doctors but it seems that all the doctors in our general vicinity always rx to everyone the same bs meds regardless of how physically harmful they might be as long as they are not narcotic. anyway, he has always has rxs for soma, not a problem, but once his doctor gave him a script of ativan to take daily, which, btw, didn't work AT ALL, and then handed him a script for flexeril. he ended up in the er. i don't think ativan and flexeril mix, but i'm not a doctor, so this is just a guess. he flushed away all his flexeril not long after i did the same to mine. the ativan went down the toilet as well. might be different for others. got to be. doctors are still rx-ing them.

anyway, this is just what i had the misfortune to have experienced. i, too, am curious as to what others have to say about flexeril.

cheers, c.(angel)

Yes, that's true. Flexeril doesn't do a thing for me. It certainly doesn't cause any drowsiness or sedation of any kind. Soma is highly effective if I take it on an empty stomach, not so helpful if I have eaten.

Peace,
Jack

Same here. Flex gives me a dry mouth and makes me hafta urinate frequently. Soma provides a great buzz. Flex does not. Take as directed by the Dr. Maybe he will tell you to take 1,050 mg's.

The best price I've found yet; 120 count for only 80$. Great deal! However, it did take about 2 weeks to get my order.

They both make me tired. With Soma I can get up the next
morning OK. With Flexeril I feel like a walking zombie
until about noon.

that happened for me also! it didn't do anything for my back but i had horrible cotton mouth, had trouble swallowing (i think it was in conjunction with the dry mouth), and i started having a had time breathing. the next time my back went out, i went in to see my doc. and they tried to rx me the flexeril again when i said "NO WAY"!!! i explained my side effects and then she said "oh no, we don't want to give that to you again" and proceeded to take it a step further. i don't remember what the rx was that she wanted to give me but it was a pill that you take only once a day and i think it started with an "S" (not positive on that though). anyway, considering i was in serious pain, i just asked if i could go back to soma as i know they actually work for my back spasms without horrible side effects. she looked at me funny but then gave me the rx for soma. HELLO!!! i couldn't go into work and i had to have someone else drive me to the doc's office...after examining me she said that i did a number on my back and then wants to look at me as if i asked for heroin?!?! anyway, basic point is i think for some reason flexeril is the new rx that docs are trying to force on their patients and it seems that a lot of people are having a hard time taking it. soma gets my vote!

Yes, soma is far far more effictive on an empty stomach. I agree with you completely! you can eat something after, but if you do before then it seems to be a waste.

I was on flexeril and naprosyn, all I wanted to do was sleep! It was horrible, I felt like a zombie as well...I stopped taking both after 3 days. The doc just gave me voltaren...I feel too tired to get through the day! So, he f\gave me 800 mg Motrin, and I was puking my guts up with the poops all night:(
I feel too weird asking him for anything stronger though...

I've taken flexeril off and on for years now. After two car accidents in the last six months (not my fault), I have back pain every day. When the pain is caused by spasms, flexeril helps more and longer than hydro. My doctor is so stingy with hydro, it pisses me off. When my back just hurts so bad and I have no hydro left, I usually take 1 flexeril, 2 soma, and a couple ibuprofen. If it's at night, I'll add 1mg of ativan so I can get to sleep. I tried baclofen and that didn't help at all. I tried skelexen and it didn't do squat. Different people react differently, I guess.
