Hi all...first thanks for all the great advice on running. My knees are still a mess and my ankles hurt too now so I'm not sure whats going on.
I have a ? for all of the pain suffer's out there. I have had lower abdominal pain for about a year and a half now and it is not going away. The pain is much worse when I lye down (really bad when I try to get to sleep at night). I have been to several different GI specalists and they have no answer for me. They have even gone as far as to do a flex-sigmoidoscopy (which by the way is the most painful procedure I've ever had done) and that came back normal too. They thought it could be IBS however I never get any cramping and I don't have the bloated feeling often associated with IBS.
I have scheduled an appointment with a GYN pelvic pain specalist for the end of October but have already seen a regular GYN last year (who by the way did a transvaginal ultrasound and found everything to be normal there).
So, I'm left in a limbo with my pain still occuring and no one willing to give me a diagnosis. The GI doc gave me Ultracet, but its not helping with the pain (and I'm on Zoloft for panic attacks and stress and Ultracet-Zoloft have severe medical interactions so I'm not able to increase the dose over 1 pill). I have taken hydrocodone, and that seems to be they only thing that will actually work for me (and since the pain is worse when I lye down at night, that is the only time I have to take it). The GI doc told me he wouldn't prescribe me narcotics before trying EVERYTHING else (which by the way is costing me a fortune b/c most of the drugs I've tried are brand names and cost $30). I have used OP before but with all the legality (how it is illegal to obtain medication without a face-to-face interaction with a doctor) I'm scared to use them, plus they are really expensive. I'm lucky enough to have health insurance at the time.
So, after my novel I wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar pain and if they ever got the diagnosis. Its really sad, I'm in med school, and I've even ran out of answers (I have done some...limited research).
Thanks!

Hi, its interesting that you are having research issues..I wish you the best in your quest...
That being said, have you investigated food allergies? I have found that my food allergies have caused a great many problems that I am eliminating.
I am wheat/gluten/dairy/egg/egg white allergic with some secondary allergies.
I am now on a restricted diet, and looking at vitamins as well to help heal myself. I look at it as "building blocks" and adding foods, vitamins in as I investigate. I am doing most of this by my lonesome..without expensive docs, once I got the information regarding the allergies.
I dunno, just some random thoughts I would throw out there...
take care, and wish you all the best..

hi... Zoloft and Ultracet are bad to take together? I didn't know this and have took them together before. Please let me know what you know about the interactions if you take them 2gether..
thanks

Have you found out what's causing your abdominal pain?

Haveyou ever had an appendectomy or any other abdominal surgeies/?? The reason I ask is cause it(the pain) could be cause by adhesions from scar tissue........
I tried to take that butterfly off, but couldn't......

I am acutally lucky to be in the health care field, so I am able to do research outside of the docs office and understand the medical jargon.
To answer to some of the replies:
- yes I have considered diet modifications. I have tried every combination you could think of. What one of the posters was referring to (wheat/barley/oats) is called Celiacs disease. I have not been tested for this but I have tried eliminating anything with these ingredients (and you would be surprised at how many food has minor amounts of these ingredients) but it has not helped. I have tried to eliminate dairy, fats, alcohols and everything else under the sun and it doesn't help.
- I have not had any abdominal surgery (such as appendectomy) so that would rule out scarring
- basically, I am just going to keep trying to find something. I think that it is going to be a common illness presenting in an abnormal way (and that's why no one can figure it out yet).
Yes Ultracet and Zoloft have interactions. If you go to Discovery Health and click on the drug interaction link. It really depends on the dose of Zoloft you are taking (the higher the dose, the more the risk). Also, the docs had me on two other medications that increased the risks for seizures (especially when past head trauma was in the history and I've had two severe head traumas)....so basically I stopped taking everything. Here is what it said:
Major Interaction -- Drug-Drug
sertraline and acetaminophen-tramadol
GENERALLY AVOID: The coadministration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with tramadol, which has weak serotonin reuptake inhibiting effect, may potentiate the risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5HT1A receptors. Patients receiving this combination may also have an increased risk of seizures. Pharmacokinetically, coadministration with certain SSRIs, namely fluoxetine, paroxetine and possibly sertraline, may result in decreased plasma concentrations of the active O-demethylated (M1) metabolite of tramadol due to inhibition of CYP450 2D6, the isoenyzme responsible for the formation of the metabolite. The clinical significance of this potential interaction is unknown. However, M1 is thought to possess up to 6 times the analgesic effect of tramadol, thus diminished therapeutic response to tramadol should be considered. MANAGEMENT: In general, the concomitant use of SSRIs and tramadol should be avoided if possible, or otherwise approached with caution if potential benefit is deemed to outweigh the risk. Patients treated with the combination should be closely monitored for signs and symptoms of excessive serotonergic activity such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia.

wow...the parts that I understood of that scared me a little! My doctor has prescribed both Zoloft and Ultracet to me, and neither him or my pharmicist told me any of that!
Plus the ultracet made me sweat and have cold chills like crazy, so I stoped taking it. And I stay confused all of the time anyway
Anyway, thanks for the info. I hope you find an answer for your problem soon.
Good luck!
