i have always had knee problems, more like joint problems in general, mostly shoulders and knees. inherited this from my dad. i haven't had this checked out yet by my doctor because it doesn't bother me all the time. every so often my knee or shoulder somehow becomes "dislocated", like it comes out. really freaky to look at, always scares bf out of the room when it happens. but after i get it back in it only bothers me for the next few days and only certain activities. my dad has, or rather had, the same problem and he was seeing some quack for years who insisted that pt would fix it but it kept becoming worse. finally he changed doctors and found out that he had a torn meniscus. he had to have knee surgery and i believe they removed his plica. i'll have to ask. anyway, he has been doing much better since the operation.

i don't think x-rays would be very helpful. an mri might be in order.

good luck to you. hope you get better soon!

cheers, c.(angel)

A really common knee problem is patella femoral syndrome. Look it up on the internet and see if your symptoms are similar.
Feel better :-)

My husband and myself both have no cartridge in our right knee. His is ALOT worse then mine, I feel so helpless at times for him. They have x-ray both our knees
and we both have advanced degenerative arthritis in our right knees, again his is So much worse then mine, and we are to young (42 and 43) as the DRs say to have any type of knee replacment. I'm not sure if any info I provide has helped, but i thought I would share with you what we did (X-rays) to find out about the pain in our knees.
Good luck to you, and please keep all of us informed what happens.
Have a wonderful weekend!
-Pam

You need to see an orthopedic specialist. He/she will bend/twist your knee joint in ways you didn’t know were possible, and determine if you have ligament damage. If you don’t, then you probably have a torn meniscus. An MRI can confirm this, and the operation is day surgery. In three days, you’ll be walking without crutches, and in a month you’ll be more or less back to normal. If you have ligament damage, the operation is more complicated and the recovery time is longer, and depending on how bad the damage is, you might not get back to 100%. Even if it’s a torn meniscus, you may not get back to 100%-- I certainly didn’t.

Whatever the case, you’ll get an MRI. A normal X-ray is useless for diagnosis of these problems. If your doctor wants a simple X-ray, find another doctor.

As to pain management, beware! Orthopedic doctors love NSAID’s. Take them for 10-20 years and you can kiss your kidneys goodbye. Your best bet is that surgery will fix your problem, and also, knee braces are wonderful. I can play decent racquetball with a couple of $15 knee braces, but without them I can’t.

All the advise above is very good. See an orthopedic doc, stay away from NSAID's, at least do not take them daily for to long. Watch out to if you take hydro, it is very easy to over do it and cause more damage with no pain. It can be a vicious cycle and tolerance becomes an issue. I have had four knee operations. Good luck and take care of that knee it sucks when they wear out.
