I can tell you what's been related to me about ambien. Many people I know took it for a year (some less) it worked great and then just stopped working completely.
I don't know if this is what you were saying but it seems very common for ambien to suddenly stop working.
I don't know about Sonata, sorry.
I would also like to know if any other sedative/hypnotics are available through OPs, great question!

i personally have never taken sonata but my mother did and she said that it didn't work for anything. the doc gave that to her instead of ambien, when she requested ambien, and he said that he wanted her to try the sonata because the ambien can be habit forming. for a week she tried the sonata, night after night and in the end, called the doc. and got the ambien. thank goodness she didn't get a perscription of the sonata, they were just samples. hope that helps.

unless i'm mistaken Sonata is much weaker than Ambien. IIRC, from the commercials way back when, Sonata is mainly for people who have trouble falling asleep, not staying asleep. It wears off much quicker, so there's nowhere near as much chance of grogginess in the morning. I know that the one time I had a script for sonata it might as well have been sugar-pills because they did absolutely nothing. I'd look for something besides this one if it were me. Personally, i've found that 10mg of valium + 3mg of melatonin about 30-45 minutes before bedtime works pretty well..
Good luck,
L

I have to agree!
Xanax knocked me out completely, I took it on and off for two years to help combat insomnia and it certainly did the trick for me. I had to keep increasing the dose to get the same effect though, so after a while I came off them. I tapered using Valium for a week and had minimal withdrawal symptoms... BUT... as you will see, if you check other posts re Xanax, a lot of people have MAJOR withdrawal's coming off of that stuff... SO BEWARE... you have been warned!

Sonata works on me a little better than ambien, for me. However you end up with a very dry tounge & nasal cavity because it is a decongestant. On the bright side though, you will not wake up with the taste of Best if kept off the board in your mouth lasting until the afternoon as you do with ambien.

Does anyone know why Ambien just stops working? I've been taking it off & on - (10 doses in the last 2 months)
I would hate to have it stop working!
I haven't noticed any bad taste the next day.

It doesn't work very well for me anymore, and I only used it for about 2 weeks straight, but my mother-in-law has used it for several years & it still works for her, bad taste & all. Apparently not all of us get the "bad taste", you must be one of the lucky ones. I get the after taste for about 12-18 hours & my mother-in-law does as well.

Don't even think of taking Xanax for insomnia. It is one of the most addictive drugs on the market. You quickly develop a tolerance and quickly need more to get the same relief. It is horrible to w/d from which is what I'm going through now.
My psychiatrist has prescribed me Sonata to help me sleep while I'm coming off the Xanax. I think the Sonata has helped me to sleep for at least 3 to 4 hours. That doesn't sound great but when you also consider that I'm doing a w/d from Xanax it has helped. Before the Sonata, I wasn't sleeping much at all.
I've taken Ambien. Again, I developed a tolerance really quickly. It is only to be used short-term.
The bottom line is that I can't handle most addicting meds. My husband has control of my meds and gives me my exact dose every night. I just can't have control of my meds. I can't control the amount I take. The Xanax is by far the worst addicting medication I've ever taken.
Maybe it isn't that way for everyone. I just wanted to everyone a head's up.

I have insomnia from my pain meds, sometimes I'll be up for 3 days straight. I have found that almost any benzodiazapine will work, some docs do not like to prescribe diazapam b/c they say it is more addictive. Funny my doc will give me as much zanax as I need but will not prescribe ambien or diazapam. hacion works, some docs try to use seizure meds for sleep b/c of their side effects but I think that it isn't worth it b/c of all of the other side effects.

I use three tranqualizers: Valium (which works the worst of the three) xanax which works the best and longest and clonopin which is in the middle as far how it works for me.
I have been through periods of a few months with no tranqualizers and still did not have withdrawls. But everyone is different.
IF you are looking to sleep, restorel ( I misspselled it-sorry) works good. But any ot this stuff is supposed to only be used for a short time.
I tried Ambien and it did nothing for me.
Right now the clonopin has began to stop working. I know that my doctor is getting tight ___ about xanax these days and I doubt that he will prescribe it unless I make a big deal about it. He likes that clonopin is less addictive.
To bad that what works is usually addictive but that is the price people pay if they get involved with pain killers and tranqualizers.
I wish that there was something that you could take and not build a tolerance to and just get off when you wanted. I don't knwo of any drugs unless you are like me that doesn't seem to get withdrawls. But I have a strange metabolism and I am far from 'normal'.

Yea, I find that Zanax works the best for me, no withdrawl. But I think that I get depressed on it after awhile, but my doc loves to prescribe it he says valuim is too addictive and he thinks that ambien doesn't work. I agree with him on that. I think I'll stick with zanax.

FWIW, I don't buy for one minute the current idea that Klonipin/Rivotril (clonazepam) is less addictive or more or less hard to come off of than other benzos. I've been there/done that, and it was no better than coming off any of the others for the most part. I've tried so many different benzos - alprozolam, bromazepam, clonazepam, diazepam, estazolam, flunitrazepam, lorazepam, midazolam, nitrazepam, oxazepam, temazepam and probably a couple others (this is over a 15ish year period) - and I can say from my experience, with my body chemistry, that they all are horrid, horrid things to quit after taking them daily for much longer than a couple weeks. ESPECIALLY if you're like me and don't get much relief from any but the highest mg pills of each type. Ugly, scary, freaky, B-A-D indeed. Right now i'm taking diazepam but it just makes me too sleepy so i am switching back to clonazepam (if it ever arrives!) which seems to not make me so sleepy in the day, but I know it's still making a deal with the devil - switching from one "bad" thing to something equally "bad", bad being relative in this case of course. To those lucky ones who experience no w/d, I would give anything to be in that boat! You are SO fortunate! I know that when I tapered off xanax (2-4 mg per day) it was a living nightmare. As tempting as it is to try these meds because, well, they DO work pretty well especially at first, i'd suggest trying just about every other option before jumping on the benzo train to hades... At a minimum i'd recommend that anyone who has 'trouble' with keeping their dosages under control to especially stay away from these. I know the benzos have done plenty of good for me, but overall they have been a curse in disguise because after this many years I can taper off and quit and still feel w/d effects months after stopping. Then they may disappear completely, only to return a few months later! Pain meds, no problem for me. When the pain stops I don't feel the need/urge to continue taking them. With benzos..... it seems to be a never-ending cycle of stop.... can't stand it. Start back, can't stand it. Stop again, remember why I started back. Start back, remember why I stopped. It's CRAZY...
Just my 2¢ as obviously YMMV....
