Ugh migraines again
      #192567 - 10/10/04 07:15 AM

I am having a huge amount of job stress this year. Long story, but my migraines have reappeared. Can anyone recommend a good migraine med that has no opiates. I have bad reactions to opiates and stadol which is no option either. I was supposed to get maxalt which I ran out of and Dr. Doolittle as I call him supposedly called in some at Walgreens and Walgreens has no records of it so back at square one. I have fioricet but find it to be not very helpful. I have loritabs but I am afraid to take them due to the nausia factor. Any help is appreciated.

have you tried imitrex? the pills never worked for me, i could take 6 of them and nothing. however, the shots did work for me, but as much as i hated giving myself shots, anything is better than a migraine. unfortunately, i cannot take imitrex anymore as it interacts badly with my dexedrine. i take fioricets w/ codeine now and i find them effective if i catch my migraine early enough. if not then it's off to er for demerol or morphine. it's unfortunate that you're allergic to opiates....

but imitrex might be an option. but remember, just because the pills might not work doesn't mean that the shots won't either.

migraines are hell on earth, i know. good luck to you.

sincerely, c.(angel)

THanks angel, yes they are the worst kind of hell. I did Imitrex for a while and still have some. They made my body go numb so I avoid them. May end up in er tonight cause cant take them anymore.

Imatrix is just one of a large family of triptans. Some of the others may work for you and may work better without side effects. These include:
zolmitriptan (Zomig)
naratriptan (Amerge, Naramig)
rizatriptan (Maxalt)
almotriptan (Axert)
frovatriptan (Frova)
eletriptan (Relpax)
D.

Good luck. Headaches suck.

A cheaper, non-narcotic med that helps with my migraines is "midrin". Imitrex does not work for me either as it makes me violently ill and I break out in hives.

It depends if you are female or male as to what treatments are available. Have you tried esgic or esgic plus or cafergot (i think that is how it is spelled). I have had migraines for years and i am allergic to ergotamines such as imitrex and zomig. Im in med school in fl and I hate ending up in the er having to get a demerol shot after 2 days of having a migraine b/c it keeps me from attending class etc.

You may be in medical school, but ergotamines are not triptans. Imitrex and Zomig are triptans, not ergotamines. Please get your facts straight. There may well be other triptans which would help the original poster. Ergotamines (e.g., DHE-45) might also be an avenue to explore.

serotonin agonists are used in migrains, both ergot and non ergot. maxalt is a nonergot serotonin agonist that might be worth a try if you talk to your doc about it again. caffeine is always a headache medicine which also constricts blood vessels. its in exedrine. 100 grams of pure caffeine powder can be obtained from bulknutrition for 4 dollars. jet alart brand caffeine pills are the cheapest commonly sold caffeine pill. but maybe you are already a caffeine drinker and it doesnt help anymore. cutting caffeine will for sure worsen migrains in people who get them. hmm what opiates or opioids did you have a bad reaction too? it might be that you have a bad reaction to any drug that acts on opioid receptors, or it might be a specific family of opiates and semisynthetics.

PS if you dont intake caffeine regularly and decide to try it, its better to try peices or halves of a pill rather than full 100 or 200 mg pills. MINIMUM dose necessary should be used combined with asprin or ibuprofin. ask your doctor about this first.

i forgot about midrin... might work for you and there's no bad side affects. midrin worked for me only occasionally so i stick with fioricets w/codeine. don't want to take a chance with a migraine! i have had only limited success with maxalt as well.

once i had a rx for cafergot (has ergotamine) but it was so expensive that i never got it filled.

tone is right about caffeine. if you notice, a lot of headache meds contain caffeine, fioricet included, and even most of the otcs that claim to be for migraines. caffeine has a tendency to constrict blood vessels (migraines are believed to be caused by the dialation of blood vessels) but beware.... i used to drink coffee every morning so i was used to having caffeine in my system regularly. on those mornings when i was running late and either skipped my coffee or drank it late, invariably, i would get a migraine. now, the only time i drink coffee is when i feel a migraine coming on. might just be me but it's food for thought.

again, wishing the best for you.

cheers, c.(angel)

Well excuse the heck out of me . The point I was trying to make is that because of certain conditions , especially heart conditions ergot meds and triptans are not and option. I have marfan's syndrome and I can not take those medications because of my heart. I had tried to post something earlier more detailed but my connection failed and all the info I wrote got erased. So I just got frustrated and decided to just put in short posts. Do you have a problem with the fact that I mentioned I am in med school? I did not mean anything by it. and yes it does not mean that I know everything. I have seen Doc's make far worse mistakes!

Wow, I agree migraines are a serious bummer. I can't eat or have any light around me. Any smell makes me throw up. It's aweful. I have had them since I was 8 years old. I found that Imitrex for me works the absolute best. I can't take any opiates as the dialate the blood vessels as someone said and I need mine constricted in a big way lol.

So, ya Imitrex for me all the way, but I am uninsured right now and w/o insurance they cost an arm and a leg unfortunately

Tranquileyez, Try www.inhousedrugstore.com for imitrex. I too suffer from migraines and cluster headaches, and I have been using inhousedrugstore for a couple of years now. They ship out of new zealand, but they are reliable and honest. They have both the imitrex pill and nasal spray. I usually receive my meds in about 9 days after ordering. Look them up. It was cheaper to order through them than to get my imitrex WITH my insurance. It's crazy!!!!

Also as mentioned before, the shots seem to work better in most people thatn the pills. Maybe because they get into your system faster.
I also have 'he**graines', and have treid everything under the sunm and the inimtex injection works wonders. That plus Phenegran for the vomitting. But sometimes it gets so bad I have to go to the ER...the bill sucks but it's worth it to not be in agony.
good luck
