Ibuprofen and Tylenol aren't doing it for me on a recent sports injury. I had determined probably the next best step up without getting into anything too powerful with big addiction/withdrawl is time-released codeine (I think they usually come in 50mg tablets that dissolve over 12 hours) 'Retard' is the name in the Spanish label. I ordered some from Europcare about 18 days ago and nothing has shown up. I was going to take it with Tylenol at about a 1 to 6 ratio (50mg Codeine for every 300mg Tylenol) so I can just take one 325mg tylenol and 1 50mg time release Codeine. I think this will do better than 1g of Tylenol or Ibuprofen I'm taking and will go a bit easier on the liver than taking 2 Tylenol 3's.
1) Is this the best drug to go with or is there an alternative?
2) Is there a better source than Europcare for this stuff?

Tylonal is the worst one. advil and asprin will both be more effective. most doctors agree that if you have to go on an opioid, the lowest possible effective dose should always be used

Try tramadol, suppose to work on the same receptors in your brain as codeine. Some swear its the best thing for pain, others complain tylenol is better. I find it definately stronger than any OTC pain reliever, but 100mg tramadol maybe only as effective as 30 mg codeine ( 1 tylenol #3), and not quite as good as 5 mg hydo. Have read that in certain studies they have learned that differant peoples stomach enzymes effect how much of it is absorbed, hence its differant effects on people, also it claimed that it was more efficient in women. The good thing is its real easy and inexpensive to obtain. Good luck!

I think the key question is, what type of pain are you experiencing? Is it muscle, organ, disease, an injury, a chronic progressive debilative process, or is it a short term ouchy?
All pain should be treated, differently, and yet, effectively.

I agree w/ trying not to take any opiates if you can help it. I'm currently taking Ultram, and going through hydro withdrawals which is terrible. My doc. gave them to me after a car accident, and I didn't know what I was doing to myself until it was too late.
Try 800mg ibuprofin also.

Not knowing your entire condition, I would try codenol (45mg codeine/500mg paracetemol) from www.canadarxdirect.com I've had UNREAL service from them lately and highly recommend them. Take care and best of luck!

The type of pain I'm treating is severe muscle pain accompanied by a tension headache bordering on a migraine but not quite that bad. The good thing is, that it is not constant. I insured my shoulder in a car accident years ago. Whenever I do sports (Tennis, Golf, etc.) that gives my arm a workout, I'll experience the pain for a day or so after and then it gradually subsides. Physical therapy has helped a bit but I'm finding in the first 24-hours after the actvity, none of the OTC medications are helping to the point where the pain is low enough to not bother/distract me while I'm working (sitting at a keyboard most the day doesn't help). So I just need something to take occasionally, for a short period (a day or two). This is why the opiate addiction/withdrawl really isn't a factor in my case as opposed to someone who need to take the medication constantly over several days or weeks.
I've heard not so good things about Tramadol. I was heading the Codeine route since it seems to have the least side effects and is the least potent of all these pain killers. Hydrocodone, OXycotin, and such as simply out of the question and unecessary. I just need something to give the OTC's a little boost, but don't want all the Acetaminophen going through my liver or the Aspirin upsetting my stomach.
Interesting fact, the anti-inflammatory properties of Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Naproxen actually slow down the muscle healing process since inflamation is what helps the muscles rebound through the increased blood flow.
I was looking for the sustained release codeine because I need something that will last me through the work day and don't want to keep remembering to dose nor want a roller coaster of peaks and valleys as far as the relief.

I would recommend taking 800 mg Ibuprophen three times a day w/the codine vs tylenol. Tylenol does nothing to reduce inflammation and 800 mg ibuprophen taken consistently, i.e. whether your hurting or not, will actually reduce inflammation that is causing the pain. jmo

I second that advice. Imflamation responds best to NSAIDS.

I also agree with the 800mg motrin. Sometimes that is just as effective for me than 5/500 lortab.
