Best Benzo for short-mid term anxiety?
      #189451 - 09/29/04 10:14 AM

I have a friend a short while back who lost her son in a car accident. Her doctor prescribed Xanax to help deal with the stress/anxiety. I've learned a lot about Benzodiazepines from this board and other sites. I'm not sure if she is still taking it or how much but I'm thinking of checking up on her. If she is still taking Xanax, especially in good size doses, I'm not sure if she is really aware what she is in for if she tries to stop. (Maybe she already has?) For short-mid term stress/anxiety management in this type of situation, wouldn't Klonopin (Clonazepam) really be the better choice since it lasts longer, needing only one dose a day or so? I know people have had better success with Xanax for panic and GAD because it has a much more pronounced effect, but it seems that the information is pointing to Klonopin really being the better choice these days for mild-moderate short term anxiety management wince the much longer half-life makes the withdrawl easier? It's kind of between Xanax and Valium in that respect isn't it? The equivalent dose on Klonopin though is about half Xanax right. 1mg Xanax = .5mg Klonopin.

Since we don't know if your friend is still taking the med, and if so in what doses, we really can't address the first question. But as to which med would be the best for her, i can say from at least in my experience it very much depends on the individual and their body chemistry. For some folks Ativan is the best. For me all it does is wipe out my memory. Xanax works very well for me but it's more expensive so I tend to stick to valium, even though it makes me a bit groggy at times, or clonazepam, which IMO is sort of a mid-range between valium and xanax. I personally like bromazepam as it works very well for me and seems to cause the least unwanted side-effects, but my old cheap source for it (access-meds) has gone away and i've not seen any deals on it lately. I also have had great luck with Nitrazepam, both with effacacy and it not being to 'troublesome'. There seems to be 30 dozen different benzos if you look around, each with their own little differences. Good luck with/to your friend!

In my opinion, I think Ativan would be best, My Mom took it for acouple of years. But if your friend Is still taking the xanax, She might need some help from a proffessional as to how much to take and be able to stop the xanax without having to go thru those horrible sounding withdrawls. I have not had xanax to know how horrible they are, but I have read here they are. Maybe someone that knows better could reply? Good Luck.............
