BigC,
That was a really eye opening post, and you managed to say in 3 words what it all really comes down to as far as Chronic Pain is concerned: "PAIN IS REAL"!!
Excellent way of putting that!!

The clerk said 'no'. I used to see otc with small amounts of quinnine which did surprise me since quinnine I thought was prescription only. This was right after perscription quinnine was no longer prescribed. I tried one of these otc leg cramps medications and I don't remember that this otc med worked.
I don't know if I was originally prescribed quinine or quinnine sulfate. I think it was pure quinnine. Quinnine sulfate seems to work about the same either way.
But thanks for the suggestion.
BTW I even went to Walgreens and asked a pharmacist if the store had otc products with bits of quinnine and he said 'no' but then he said that quinnine waws back on the market with a script.

Quinine can be purchased OTC in solution - Look under 'tonic water'. It DOES have a warning lable that it contains quinine. I like Canada Dry best.
The tradition started because the british needed to dose military personelle in India with quinine as a malaria prevenitive - and the Gin and tonic was born. Gin is optional - not advised if you take other meds

I wonder if it depends on where you live if they carry it. I'm in fl, i bought my bottle of it a couple of weeks ago from walgreens. I just went to walgreens website and they carry it on there for $5.49 for 40 tablets. I wonder if maybe the clerk was thinking of something else or maybe i'm thinking of the wrong thing. If you go to walgreens website type in leg cramps with quinine in the search box and it will bring up what i bought from them. Here's the link for what i bought: http://www.walgreens.com/search/search_results.jhtml?term=Leg+cramps+with+quinine§ion=A&submit.x=72&submit.y=10 I hope it works, i have no clue how to do a link on here, lol. Hope this helps you some. Take care.

I'm also in a battle with my doctors to get the most effective, and least damaging to my body, pain management for me. The pain meds I am taking now are very damaging to my liver. Also I find myself having to take more and more of them to be effective. Sometimes I think doctors treat their patients like geunia (sp?) pigs, and just keep prescribing different meds until one works, instead of really listening to their patients and finding something that will help long term. Well, that's how I feel about mine anyway!
But I think you have to be very insistent when it comes to your health, and even finding a different doctor if necessary. Because really, you're the only person in the world who takes care of you!
