Help For Toothache???
      #187094 - 09/16/04 11:24 PM

My b/f has had a bad toothache since lsat Friday, he finally couldn't take it anymore and we went to the dentist on Monday. We found out that he has some bacteria in his teeth which they said was caused by either acid reflux or drug use and believe me, he never takes anything stronger than tylenol! We found out that he needs 5 teeth pulled so we were referred to an oral surgeon and went there that same afternoon. We thought they were going to pull the teeth THAT day but with dissappointment, found out they can't do it until NEXT Wed! So they sent him home with some penicillin and vicodin, the lowest dose may I add. The pain comes and goes but he hasn't been as bad since being on the antibiotic. He just woke up in extreme pain and I wasn't sure if there was a quick remedy we could use. I gave him one of my percocets and covered the tooth in ambasol. I hate seeing him in pain so if there's anyone that has gone through something like this before and had something work for you, could you please help me? I would appreciate any feedback. Thank you all in advance! Sorry for my bad spelling, don't know how to spell all these drugs! lol

Wishing you all happy pain free days!!

Well, it sounds like you are doing all the things that I have done before when my teeth hurt. Is it just the bacteria making it hurt or is there nerve spasms as well? The way you can tell is if the gums spasm with pain when he does certain things. Since it is bacteria you may have him try swishing some peroxide around in his mouth(do not swallow any of it), that may help. Also I had someone tell me to put milk in my mouth and hold it over the teeth that hurt and it stung pretty bad at first but did help. Pure aspirin seems to work good for teeth too, and then the anbesol, are you using the liquid or gel? The gel seems to penetrate better and stays on better and you localize it with a q-tip too.

Sorry for his pain, I have been there many times and nothing is worse than tooth pain, makes you feel bad all over.

I am so very sorry for your boyfriend. I have been down that road many a time. Tons of dental work & have crowns on all my molars (due to grinding all the enamel off them), many root canals, and veneers on my front teeth (not a great idea---my 8 front teeth were fine. I should never have let the dentist talk me into the veneers). After the veneers, I had a similar experience as your boyfriend. It hurt so incredibly it would wake me up at night. The dentist just told me to take 4 advil at a time. Never rx'd anything. Can you try an overnight OP to get something stronger? That would be my advice. However, from the years of dental pain I've been through, oftentimes, nothing really helped. I am so sorry & sorry he has to lose that many teeth. I hope they replace them. It is so disheartening to lose any teeth. Tooth pain is the worst though.

Thank you all so much for answering~After do all I did last night and giving him an ice pack he finally drifted off to sleep. He did however only get about 2-3 hrs of sleep before work. Man, toothaches can really take a toll on you! Seems like the worse pain ever. The sad thing is, he has such perfect, pretty teeth!

Cmerts~ Thank you for responding, It was the ambesol GEL that we were using. I think it helped him some what with the relief but just wish it would have worked faster.

Daeshay~ Thank you for your answer on the tea bag, I had actually seen that last night when I did an online search for a toothache and I wanted some fast relief for him but really didn't think he would be up for that one

Want2bcalm~ Thanks for your info also, I'm so to hear that you yourself have been through so much dental pain! It's not fun I know that! We just can't wait until Wed when they pull them all and get it all over with! The bad thing is, we're going to vegas 2 days later for a couple of days, so I hope they give him enough pain pills to tie him over.

Thank you all again so much for your answers. I called his Dr.'s office this morning to see if we can get either something stronger for the pain or more vicodin since he has to take at least 2 for it to work on his pain. I'm just waiting for them to call back but they seem like a pretty sincere office and you KNOW someone that has to have 5 teeth pulled is going to be in some pain!! A
Will keep you all posted if you would like. Take care and have a great pain free day!!

you might want to try oil of clove. it has anasethic (sp) properties and is recomened by most first aid books. also tea bags, and i mean lipton tea type bags are good. Tea contains tinanic acid. it works by drawing out the infection. also tea bags can be used for minor cuts.espically shaving type cuts the tinaic acid activates the cloting factor and will stop bleeding within a minute or two..

johng~ Thank you for responding. So do I just put the tea bag in really hot water as if I were making tea and then have him place it where the tooth pain is?

I'm hoping that he'll be ok today because the Dr. called back and said they wrote a script for some percocett for him so hope tonight will be a better night for him. I also read and heard about the clove oil. It said that you could even take a clove from your spice rack and put that right where the tooth pain is also, said it may not be too appetising but it helps. I may get some clove oil today though and try that out in case he has another painful moment like that. The first thing I thought was....I'll ask my friends at DB!! Everyone is SO helpful here and I'm so thankful everyday that I can turn to DB for any help that I need whether it be for a pain question, a mental question or just needing support, and that's a great feeling! Thanks again to ALL of you! Have a GREAT day!!

just put the DRY tea bag on the the tooth. then fold the remander in to the side of the tooth like a person would put chewing tobacoo. so i/2 on the tooth the reaming bag folded doen (or up depending if it is top tooth or bottom one) leave it there for as long as nesscary. it also tastes somewhat good!

Let me know if you have any questions. I have instructed first aid classes for many years now
and I want to help

Oh cool! Thank you very much for the info. I guess I could just have him put it inside his cheek since it's his top and bottom molar. There's 5 teeth total that have to be pulled. The side that bothers him now is the left 2. The right 3 don't really cause him any pain.....yet. We just want this over as soon as possible. Like I said, we're going to vegas 3 days after he has them all pulled so I hope this doesn't ruin the trip for him
My brother works for the NASCAR Truck Team and he's getting us pit passes to watch the race on the 25th! Can't wait! Even get to meet all the NASCAR drivers like Dale Jr and many more. I am so jealous that my brother hangs out with them all the time....they're just normal people too though. Anyway, thanks again. HAve a great day!!

Oh Gosh - -
I feel SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad for your boyfriend!!! I swear that tooth pain can be some of the most excrutiating pain I have ever experienced. I mean I am in daily pain ever since my back surgery failed and even though the pain I experience with my back can be debilitating, I still think a tooth ache, and i mean A REALLY BAD tooth ache (probably what your boyfriend is suffering through) is worse than the back pain.

Unfortunately I too have had more dental work than anyone else my age that I have ever met! There are so many contributing factors that had been the root factor to the deteriation of my healthy teeth (no joke inteneded for the "root" problem - -haha)

I grew up in the country in CA and we had well water, but unfortunately for us we did not have flouride in the water. Also, I developed a pretty bad eating disorder for several of my teenage years and lets just say that like acid reflux, which forces the stomach acids to break down the enamel on the teeth thus allowing bacteria to get in there and DESTROY anything in sight.....well same goes for peaople that have had or still had an eating disorder like bulimia. Same thory stands.....acid from the stomach destroys the teeth. And not to sound too graphic here to anyone but the one really helpful thing I learned from my dentist about bulimics was that so many of them think that if they brush their teeth immediately after um, well, immediately after expelling their food that they will save their teeth any damage that the acid may had caused, however the complete opposite will occurr. When they brush their teeth after the stomic acid has made contact, they are basically brushing even more of the enamel off. I do not remember the details as I was told this many years ago, far too long after the advice could have helped me but it seemed like such good logical sense that I always try to pass it on whenever I can. I know that was a bit off topic but I wanted to throw it in.

But enough about me, I did just want to add one other tip I learned to help with the tooth pain, and it may sound yucky but it did help me one or two times. What you do is smash up an aspirin into powder, then put the powder on the gum over the teeth that hurt. Rub it in and leave it there as long as possible. I am not sure how this works but it did helpo me once when I was on vacation with a horrenous tooth ache and no help in sight. The hotel clerk told me about the tea bag (which I might add also helps those people with dark spots on their faces if they put a tea bag over the sopts every night and the spots will eventually fade...just a little tip for y'all) But anyway, the aspirin surprisingly helped.

I am not sure if this will even help your boyfriend since his situation is far more serious than just a cavity and most likely will need to only use pain meds until he gets them pulled.

Also, it must suck for the both of you to now have to deal with the fact that he is going to lose some of his beautiful teeth, because it REALLY is a traumatic thing to come to terms with, especially since this seemed to pop up from nowhere and he has not even had much time to deal with it, not to mention he is in such horrible pain right now that he just wants them out of his mouth so he can finally make the pain STOP. Sadly because he has been in pain the whole time he has found out he will lose 5 teeth he really is in for culture shock when the oral surgeon wakes him up and tells him he is done. Then the real horror will kick in.

I just wanted to point that out to you because in all honesty he really may have a hard time coping. I know people are probably saying "coping, what do you mean...it's not like he had cancer or anything" but to anone that thinks losing 5 otherwise healthy teeth all of a sudden is not a shocking experience has obviously never had any teeth problem, surely not at a young age. I mean being 21-19 and losing 3 teeth from my own personal hell was bad enough, but 5 all at once.....much different than getting your wisdom teeth pulled as these 5 teeth are NOT SUPPOSED to come out of the mouth!

So I was just giving you a warning. He may really need you more than ever after that is done. Be sure to re assure him that as soon as he has healed he will be able to have many options that will get him back to looking almost exactly the same as before the teeth were pulled. There are dental implants that can be put into his gums and into the bone, and I have seen people that have had these inplants in their mouth and I swear you can not tell they were not natural. There are also things like bridges and half bridges that will attach to his (hopefully) other healthy teeth and will also make it look like new!

Whatever happens, your boyfriend is lucky to have you. From one good chick to another....right on hot mama!!!

PS
My husband is addicted to NASCAR and has had his own website selling all of the cars for nearly 7 years now. He used to work in pathology at a hospital but quit to run his business full time. He has done great and luckily because of his hard work I was able to go back to the University of Oregon and graduate 3 years ago!!!!! YIPEEEEEEE

Since it seems like there are some major NASCAR connections to be made here, I thought I would throw ib a good word for my husband as he too has been there for me throughout all of my teeth problems and he was never around when I had caused so much of the damage but without him around when i went through the physical and emotional part of coping with the pain, cost, and emotional toll it all took on me I do not know what I would have done!!!

So I am not sure if I am allowed to do this here or not but I am sure if I am not allowed to then someone will alert me to this fact ASAP.

His website is www.rpmdiecast.com

See ya everyone

Just a note from an "old" Dental Assistant. Never, never put a crushed aspirin on your gums for a toothache. The aspirin will cause an acid burn of the tissue. I have seen these burns many times as this "old wives tale" has been around for years, they are nasty burns. If you are not sure, call any Dentist's office and ask if this is a good idea. The teabag treatment is fine but I have never heard it used for toothache. It was recommended for extraction sites that would not stop bleeding after the tooth was removed. The tannic acid in tea bags will help stop bleeding.

I'm wincing in sympathy.
--My neighbor put a whole clove next to her tooth on the cheek side. It's held there by the pressure of the cheek. She said it made the pain go from unbearable to a "vague ache" that was tolerable for the 2 days 'til she could get to the dentist. The whole clove acted like a time-release thing.
--The only thng is, I don't know if a whole clove would cause a chemical irritation or burn in someone else if held there long. Also, the chances of irritation are much higher if there is an open sore or wound (from surgery) in the area.
--P.S. I really hope your boyfriend is getting antibiotics before, during, and after the removals. (excuse me if you've already said so and I didn't notice). The antibiotics may reduce the pain before by reducing the inflammation. More importantly, antibiotics are always needed for dental surgery to prevent endocarditis--an infection of the heart valves caused by (often) transient bacteria in the blood. Also, use of antibiotics speed healing in the mouth because it keeps the normal flora bacteria from irritating the open wounds.
--Hope he gets better soon.

Update From Toothache/Surgery [Re: ellen1]
      #189487 - 09/29/04 01:13 PM

I just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas and support during this hard time for us. He had it done last Wed and everything went just fine. The good news is, the oral surgeon said that it wasn't caused by acid reflux or "doing drugs" but it's caused from him not being able to break down sugar properly. We still need to get that checked out as soon as possible but I think it's all going to be ok. He had his post op app today and everything seems to be healing well. He had 5 pulled total and the tops are healing better than the bottom but I guess they should be good as new soon. He still has to take the percocett for pain every now and then but at least he's starting to eat again. I just wanted to update everyone and say thank you! I really appreciate all your help and support! You guys are the best!

Hoping you all have happy pain free days!
