Is there a limit to the tolerance effect?
      #188816 - 09/26/04 08:50 PM

Is there a point where no matter how much more benzos you take, youstill won't feel anything. Any idea how much this is? Has aanybody got to this point?

Actually, not in a long time. But, valium, for instance, you will just fall asleep. With valium alone, it is hard to OD. Something is built into it. Now, mixing with other drugs, that is a different ballgame.

I believe I have reached that point, and have been there for quite some time. I've been on them for around 15 years and at this point, I can't recall the last time I took any amount, large or small and felt anything other than 'normalized' (sometimes during a panic attack 8 or 10mg of xanax is not out of the ordinary). I don't get that loose, relaxed feeling that I once got when I was first put on benzos. On the rare occasion xanax will surprise me and I will actually feel it's effect on me, but 99% of the time I don't. I have no reason to take larger than necessary doses because I fully believe that I could take 10x my normal dose and still not yawn. Long-term benzo tolerance sucks.

Have you tried weaning off them until you decrease your tolerance and then can enjoy the relaxed feeling OCCASIONALLY again?

Actually, it's hard to OD & die on most any benzo, excluding a few such as versed possibly. There's nothing special built into it, valium in particular just takes too long to take effect. The reason is, as it was explained to me in college (forensics, yay.. i mean yuck) is that the dosage necessary to kill you is high enough that you will pass out long before that large amount of pills have had time to supress your system to that point, and almost always the person vomits up the rest. It's possible to die from that of course, but disregarding that sort of thing the majority of folks who try to kill themselves with benzos find themselves waking up feeling terrible many many hours after the attempt. FWIW the book Final Exit does not recommend benzos for such a purpose. Just more trivia for the brain...

"weaning off them" to the point that tolerance is low enough to feel them would take so long that I wouldn't think it worth it. It's certainly worth it for the purpose of not having to take such high doses, but it takes sooo long to taper that I don't think i'd bother. That stinks!

I agree with everything that LISTVOER said,I have only been taking benzos mainly xanax and occasionaly Klonopin for about 2 years and i really cant get that good feeling(euphoria) like I did when i first started!!!! I mean when I first started I could take 1mg of xanax and feel great but now I can take up to 10 or 12 mg of xanax and really the only efect I get is sleepy!!!You can build up a tolerance to benzos very fast.....The same thing occurs with opiates I remember very well 1 of the first times I took 5mg of hydrocodone,I felt like I was on cloud 9,but now I can not even get a buzz off of hydro!!!
Tolerance sucks and there is really nothing you can do about it,except maybe quit totaly for atleast 6 months, then you just might get that good feeling once again but before you even realize it you are back where you started before tou quit!!! Just my 2 cents......................
