I got my script of Xanax today and it had a label that said dont drink or eat Grapefuit? HUH? I like grapefruit, I even have a friend send me some right off their trees. I have a bigger juicer just for grapefruit.
The avoiding alcohol, full stomach, with milk, cause drowsiness, impair driving, avoid sunlight etc. I can understand - Never seen dont eat grapefruit.
I will follow it, but does anybody know why
Thanks - Zandy

Grapefruit, and grapefruit juice has an effect on the body that inhibits its ability to eliminate certain drugs from the system. Continual dosing can have a cululative effect and increase the likelihood for side-effects to develop.
Of the benzodiazepines, of which Xanax (Alprazolam) is a member, it is one of the most significantly affected.
I hope this helps.

Statin medications, too, are effected, but they lose potency instead of gain potency like Xanax does.

This topic has been talked about a million times, and probably removed from the board just as often. Im just stating a fact and of course dont encourage drug abuse.
Grapfruit Juice/ not Ruby Red , or a coctail, the good old nasty stuff. Usually, anymore you can only find it warm, in a aluminum can for about 1.25
3 things happen when alprazolam is mixed with grapefruit juice.
1. The alprazolam reaches the blood stream faster.
2. Peak plasma levels of alprazolam are increased
3. The elimination time of alprazolam or the "half life" is increased.
This information was originally put out for caution with elderly people whom already have a lower tolerance for alprazolam(the older you get the less it takes to reach a desired effect), it was actually in some nursing home that perscribed alot of alprazolam and served alot of grapefruit juice that this interaction was discovered.
The mechanism by which these two interact is still unknown.

I was told that there was an enzyme that is produced that attacks the liver when you eat grapefruits.
Just what I was told.

This was a curiosity question and not for any other reason. I take one a bedtime only. I must not be the only one that of all the labels on the orange bottles this one I thought was truely strange.
Thanks for the info guys - Z

On my xanax bottle I pick up from Walgreens, it always has the grapefruit warning label. Other pharmacies I used never have, every pharmacy is different though. Take Care

I've been taking them for so many years, I don't even read the warnings anymore. But I don't like grapefruit juice anyway. Thanks for the info!

I mixed grapefruit juice and Xanax and after a couple of times doing this I broke out in a terrible rash my neck to my waist, front and back. The rash lasted for at least a week. Be careful!!!!

The rash is most likely a reaction to the Alprazolam, you might want to get a liver fuction test.

a chemical in grapfruit inhibits the enzyme that is mostly responsible for metabolizing xanax. if you take the two together, youll have higher plasma levels of xanax, and it will take longer for the xanax to wear off.

Not just xanax but all benzo's. I used to drink grapefruit juice by the gallon and couldn't understand why I was so groggy the next day when I was taking Vals, Xanys, Klons or even ativan. Then I read about the interaction and how grapefruit inhibits metabolism of benzos. So be careful, you could really build up a high concentration especially with longer acting ones like V's and be cloudy for days.
