Hydro - Does it cause weight gain/loss
      #187230 - 09/17/04 09:39 PM

Wanted to get your opinions on Hydro and its effect on weight. Did anyone experience weight loss or weight gain? Or neither?
Thanks!

When I first started taking it (3 Norco a day) I lost MAJOR weight. We're talking 10 pounds off a 6'2" 140 pound frame. That was because I was getting into my work and the hydro gave me infinite energy and thrill-seeking behavior. I had no time for food. When I'm not excited about work or my social life, I find that hydro is not only less helpful, but I eat a lot more to compensate. So it depends on my long-term mood, I guess. It may not make you manic, but if you're happy and industrious by nature, I would guess that it would make you more so, and you would lose weight. If you're bored with life and in a lot of pain, I would plan for the opposite.

I have noticed since taking hydro i am eating more but i needed to anyways before i got pregnant with my first son which is 4 i only weighed 95 pounds at the age of 22 so i guess it has made me want to eat more...when taking it i stay hungry and in the last month i have gained about 10 pounds which puts me at 130...also hydro makes me very thirsty so i drink alot at all times...i always buy mayfield sweet tea in the gallon (dont know if anyone has heard of it) but i go through a gallon in 2 days

Stardog,

Darn, boy, you need to EAT!! 130 at 6'2?? You weigh the same amount as I do, and you're a foot taller than me! Man, you make me feel fat!! (Paging "Evil D"...you get me??? LOL). J/K

But in all seriousness, I've seen my sister drastically lose weight and gain it back over the years from her hydro use, so that's kind of a hard call to make.

I can tell you that when she puts on the weight that she looks bloated (not good ), and when she drops weight she looks gaunt (also not good!!)

She says it all depends on whether or not she's in her "zone" or not, getting wrapped up with work, kids, husband, etc., and the times where she just gets complacent. I don't really have any firsthand knowledge of it, but from seeing her and another friend of mine who was on Oxy, I have seen drastic weight loss in both of them while they were on it.

This has definitely helped me with weight loss. The loss of pain allows me to exercise more frequently and vigorously, and since I am feeling better I am more active all around. Also makes me drink tons of water. Lost 17 lbs. in the last few months. Though right now because of surgery I had to take a medrol-dose pack which made my appetite go through the roof!

I've lost 35 pounds although some of that was when I tapered off Xanax (aka the drug from hades, imo) and couldn't eat - thought I was dying. You can lose 15 pounds in a week going about that the wrong way, but that's a topic for another thread.

I've now cut down my hydro usage to practically nothing, but still have no appetite. (Hydro doesn't do much for your libido either, sad to say; waiting impatiently for that to come back). The weight loss was fine with me (you know how women are - we always think we're too heavy), but my family thinks I'm too thin. Now I need to get to the gym to firm it all up. There's the hard part!

When I was on Hydro and OxyContin for my back injuries I was a PIG! I put on 10 pounds in two weeks! I also think it had alot to do with the fact that I was in so much pain that I didnt get off the couch and do anything active. It also made me want to smoke more for some reason.
Anyway, Im better, and off the meds and dropped off those 10 lbs plus a few more. As far as libido, I had NONE. So the hubby is much happier now, lol.

Sanjuan,

It's interesting that you said that you lost weight while tapering off of Xanax, because I had the complete opposite reaction when I upped my dosage last year. I went from taking 1mg a day to at least 2 or 3 (my boyfriend and I had broken up for a few months, and I wasn't taking it very well), I'm really not positive because I was in such a haze at the time, but in a matter of 2 to 3 weeks, I had lost 20 pounds.

I wasn't complaining about it at the time, either, because I was finally able to fit into an old pair of jeans that I hadn't been able to wear in close to 2 years...but I am by no means endorsing this method of weight loss to anyone here on the board.

I could contribute my weight loss to just stress, in general, as issues with my weight have been something I've dealt with for most of my life.

But not to get off topic here, I was just stating an observation from my point of view.

Eeyore

I usually end up losing a couple of pounds depending on how long I take it for. I never seem to have much of an appetite while I am on it. It effect my mom the same way. It must just be the way our bodies react to it. I also drink alot when I take since I get a dry mouth so maybe that fills me up and I am just not as hungry???? I never lose more that 10 pounds though.

Yohimbe is an herbal thing supposed to improve your sex life, didn’t do anything for me, and still sits in my medicine cabinet. You can get it at any pharmacy or store that has a pharmacy like Wal-Mart for one. Look in the herbal or vitamin section.

When i start taking my hydro i usually have no apppetite and alot of energy.after a couple of days taking hydro i get hungry and want to eat, like the munchies.i wanted to ad that i hold water (puffy look)and have decreased sex drive after using more than a few weeks.many people have to take libido increasing drugs or supplements to help this problem.

yep same problem here ,sometimes difficult to climax because of the pain killing affect on certain body parts. my body is numb and the sensation is less for me,sometimes i can go and go with out climax, maybe a good side affect anyway.

Yohimbe always helped me when I drank too much and my girl needed some loving at 3am after a party. But you'll find the same exact problem that you have with hydro - you will be able to show up, ahem, but not finish. I often got so drunk I couldn't feel anything below my waist, but I looked down and lo and behold, the miracle cometh! Or not, as it were. My girlfriend once had 7 orgasms and I wasn't even close, so I actually faked one just to be able to go to sleep! That was my last experience with yohimbe.

OMG! I guess I never tried it when I was waisted. Still sounds like maybe the recipient may just have more fun than the one who actually takes it!

Yeah, I was totally doing it for her... and for my own self-esteem, I'll admit. It feels good to give 'em what they want! And you get a bonus the next day, when you're not wasted... bigtime!
