I have severe neck and upper back pain - shoulders and between my shoulder blades. I've seen an Orthopedic Surgeon twice who was very uncaring and told me to go have an MRI done. I just did not like him and I do not want to go back to him. 1st visit he gave me hydro for pain as well as vioxx and celebrex (i had to ask for pain meds). And sent me off to Physical therapy (which is not helping much at all). 2nd time (last week) he gave me ultracett (again had to ask for pain meds).
Who would you suggest I go to? Someone that will be more caring and that makes me feel that we will find a solutions as to what is going on. And I really need pain meds - hydro - that is the only thing that helps a litte. Should I see my regular PCP or Pain management doctor or Neuro? Please give me some info - I really appreciate it!

I would sugest a physiatrist. they are rehab doctors who specialize in spine rehab and care. they would be more carining especially if you do not need surgery. if you do they would be able to oversee your care and send you to a good back surgon.
sorry for spelling

Well first off, did you get the MRI done, and if so what were the results? I had an MVA back in June that left me with 5 compression fractures of my thoracic vertebrae. I saw my usual family doctor first, who immediately sent my for MRI and x-rays. That diagnosed the fractures, but he said he would help me get a second or third opinion since he obviously was not a specialist in back pain.
So, off to the ortho I went. After looking at the MRI's and x-rays he told me I just sprained the thoracic area!!! It was plain obvious there were fractures, as I got a copy of my films on a CD rom to look at myself at home on the computer. So, he sent me on my way with nothing but a script for physical therapy. No compassion whatsoever.
Next, I went and saw a neurosurgeon who was smart enough to see the fractures but said he didnt like operating on the thoracic area especially with my age. (27).
Basically, if you have ANY numbness/tingling in your arms, legs, hands, etc, a neurosurgeon is the way to go, as you may have nerve compression in your spinal cord.
Everyones situation is different, and all doctors are different. Luckily, my fractures have healed for the most part, but I will always have problems, also I have DDD and scoliosis. In the end, my family doctor was the one who diagnosed me correctly and treated me with approprate medication.
I wish you the best of luck, back pain is the worst. Keep us posted.

it depends where you live if you live in NH you are screwed
no doctor or specialist on neck shoulder and back pain will give you anything stronger than ultracet wich does nothing at all don't know why they make the stuff. maybe its a mental thing you think your getting a pain med but its just a placebo but doesn't work on me. sry no help just in the same situation cronic back and shoulder / neck pain you should look into prolotherapy supposed to work wonders but no one does it here mostly done back home in good old tampa
i would definitaley be in better health if i stayed. o-well
see ya
