Buying OTC Codeine in Portugal and/or Spain - HELP
      #185438 - 09/08/04 01:07 AM

Hello,

I have been ordering from over the internet for several years now (pharmagroup.com for a long time until they raised their prices two years ago and now using europcare.com). I would like to know if anyone has traveled to Europe specifically Spain or Portugal (since that is where these meds seem to ship out of most of the time) and purchased Codeine over the counter before? I would like to plan a vacation and while I am there save on shipping and mark up costs by buying my meds directly. Has anyone ever tried this and if so what was their experience?

Where did you go, what did you get, what was it priced, what to do / not to do , etc.? What's better shipping back or flying back with them?

Any helpful advice would be much appreciated as it could save alot of money (by making a vacation trip each year to Spain). I know the real prices that are scratched off on the box are much lower than what we are paying and the shipping is also marked up.

Please post a response or PM me if you are more comfortable.

In Germany almost nothing is OTC, much less than in the US. And most meds are quite expensive, which is because almost everybody has health insurance, so noone really cares for the price...

In the Netherlands are no OTC opiates.

In Swiss you can get some codeine/apap formulations, same in the UK.

But pure codeine or even DHC is not available OTC anywhere, some spanish pharmacies are said to sell it w/o prescription, but that's not officially.

Yeah but I am currently paying about $130 for a one month supply. It comes from Spain and is in the form of Perduretas Codeina retard 50mg (60 per box) which costs Euro 36,24 (US$ 44,42). Europcare up charges so much a recently limits you to only1 or 2 box per order so they can get more on shipping since you have to break up orders. It costs about 24 Euros to ship - almost $30 US which collectively breaks down to just over $1 per pill dependeing on where the dollar is. So if I spent even $1000 on a trip and paid the price that's on the box (7.90 Euros) it would get me a free trip and might save me if I bought 6-12 month or more supply in advanced. I would save over $100 per month depending on where the dollar is.

I am more interested if anyone has any feedback regarding the idea.

Thanks

I tried to order with them and they said they were not taking new customers. ( I wanted to get the free sample they spoke of but was refused.) That was several months ago though so I will try again.

Ultimately though $1 a pill gets expensive if you have to have multiples each day. Especially when they cost 8 Euros a box (for 60). I am hoping to at least see Spain out of it (for the same cost I am paying now) or maybe save some $ in the end.

Thanks,
Sara

Thanks - I emailed him again. We'll see ...

BUT ultimately I would like to save money. $1 per pill is not cheap with the amount I buy and its about the same as I was paying at Europcare.com . It seems like they should offer a deal to repeat customers or waive the 1 box limit or do something nice.

I am also considering getting a group together of pain sufferers (like the seniors do in Canada) to take turns purchasing from Spain if its possible to purchase their directly. Who knows but a start would be to confirm it is possible.

Anyone with info please PM or post.

THanks!

I just received my first sample from Biotran. Excellent meds. I'll order again. Just thought I'd let you know!

The situation is Spain

You may be able to buy a box of Codeisan, pure codeine, for about three dollars at some pharmacies. The box, and law, clearly states that a prescription is needed.

The general practice has been to dispense it without a prescription to those not looking like they are going to abuse it.
This changed recently and the common practice for codeine sales, (without prescription and at most pharmacies), is to dispense a box from time to time to customers they know and sometimes to those that they do not know if they look "OK".

As abuse grows... codeine becomes harder to obtain with or without a prescription. Is this a familiar story?

Side Note:
In Spain the prescription drug commercials always end with "consult your pharmacist"

I'm going to put on my best anti- abuse looking dress, and heels, and go to local Walgreens and try it.

I heard from someone else that they pay 3 Euro a box there too. I know the PC I was talking about earlier are about 7-8 Euro. I also heard the same "policy" - if you look okay they'll sell 9 out of 10 times. That is basically what I wanted to know (although with more details for a first time Spain traveler).

One person I heard from is going again soon so if the policy has changed dramtically I am hoping to hear word from them whether or not it has affected their shopping.

Any detailed info would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks
