How Long Will It Take?
      #186872 - 09/15/04 09:05 AM

Ok, first off, a little background here. I was involved in an auto accident in June which left me with 6 compression fractures in my thoracic spine. My doctor put me on 20 mgs of OxyContin twice a day and Lorcet for BT pain.

Two weeks ago, I quit the Lorcet cold turkey because it was giving me headaches. I know, it sounds weird that a pain med gave me pain, but it did.

My back has healed some, so at my Doctor visit last week I asked him to help me taper off the OxyContin. So he told me to take 10 mgs twice a day last week, and 10 mgs once a day this week, then after that he would put me back on Lorcet. (Yes, AFTER I told him I didnt like it).

Anyway, I want to expedite this process a bit, so on Sunday I started taking one 10 mg in the morning and nothing else. Did the same on Monday and Tuesday, with no pain or w/d symptoms. So today, I got brave and didnt take any oxy. I havent had one since early yesterday morning.

So my question is, how long will it take for the w/d symptoms to kick in? So far I feel fine. Do you think maybe I wont have withdrawl since I was not on the med that long?

Any input would be great!

Karrie

First, I'd like to say that I'm glad you survived the accident. It sounds like it was serious.

Since everyone is different, giving you a straightforward, factual answer will be impossible. It may very well be that you will not experience any withdrawal or it will be so mild that you are able to tolerate it and may not even notice any symptoms at all (which would be fantastic for you). The dosage you've been taking is not that much and the length of time you've been taking them is not that long of a period so you may be fortunate in that your withdrawal from this medication will be uneventful. Since you've already had a two week period where you've stopped taking the Lorcet you've given your body a chance to taper. 20mg of Oxy is a very low dose and stopping may be harder for you in your mind than it actually will be for your body. I have found that my mind plays a vital role in my success at stopping hydro and also plays a role in what degree of withdrawal symptoms I suffer. Our minds can be crafty little buggers that don't necessarily operate the way we intend for it to at times. We can think ourselves right into withdrawal. Of course, I may be the only weird one whose mind operates this way. I highly doubt it though.

Lovely,

Thank you so much for the response. I definately know what you mean about our minds playing tricks on us. A few days ago, I came down with a cold (which I still have) but I initially blamed the symptoms on w/d. LOL, now I know it IS indeed a cold judging by all of the Best if kept off the board that is coming out of my nose and the sinus/head pressure. Didnt mean to be gross, but thats the best way I can explain it.
20 mgs is a small dose and Im glad I never went any higher than that, as Im sure Id be worse off. Even at 20 mgs, I was really forgetful and a little irritable. I can see an improvement in those areas already.

Hope you and everyone else is having a pain free day!

It's odd that I once took 20 mgs of Oxy three times a day a few years ago for my herniated thoraic disks (before being cut off cold, which is another story ) and still had severe pain come on about 90 minutes before the next dose. Now that I take 2 Norco as a loading dose in the morning, and one every four hours thereafter (for a total of five per day) I have no such problem. I'm one of the few people who only need the Norco, and can do without the Oxy as it turns out.

No that is not weird at all. They are called rebound headaches. That is what happened to me.

If you go 50 hours without oxycodone withdrawal setting in, then its very likely you will have little or no withdrawal
