Hi D....First of all, sorry my last post re/ this subject was a little disorganized and had a couple of spelling errors. It was late and I was suffering from insomnia. The evening after my last post on "The 48hrs TV News Show" there was a special report on Bariatric Surgery
and the surgeons who do it. It was so good and stressed that 98% ot the deaths were caused by the in-experience of the MD's with this particular operation and not were not caused by the more experienced surgeons who have been properly trained. My answer to your query is this...How can you not ask those questions? If only you had seen the show and heard the grieving family members shock when they found out that so many deaths had happened and the hospitals knew about the incompetence but allowed the surgeons to continue operating and even gave them clean records so that they could transfer elsewhere and do the same thing again. The Medical Board has said that the complications go down after about 100 procedures are preformed because it takes awhile for the Drs. to fine-tune the ortho-scoptic technique, which is much less invasive then the old way.
DE...If you are buying a pre-owned car don't you inquire if it's ever been in an accident? How many miles on the spedometer? Does the owner have the repair and service records?....And you might even have it checked out by a mechanic. Your health and Life are at stake here. This is a very good option for your weight problem when done by an experienced Bariactric Surgeon. He/She will respect you for your self-awarness and intelligence to want to make an informed decision, and if they have a good medical resume/record, they'll enjoy every minute spent telling you about it. The show stated many patients meet their surgeons at public 'show and tell' group sessions that the MD's advertise in the newspaper and host. Just thought I'd throw that in. There is one man who is living a life of pain and has needed 6 operations due to massive infection because his surgeon nicked his colon causing a spill of acids and fecal matter into his belly. He was hospitalized for 6 months and did not wake up after the surgery for several days. His family now owes over 1.3 million dollars in medical bills, and are losing thier home. After 18 months He still has a huge hole in his gut that won't heal and weeps and drains daily. When he lifted his shirt to show his belly it was shocking. The many major operations have left him very deformed and scarred in addition to the grapefruit size hole. A few days before he had his surgery a couple of women who failed to wake-up after their operations died in the same major hospital. BTW...They had the same Dr. and the identical operation as the young man above. The Hospital didn't report this to the man and his wife...So just Best if kept off the board. You can have this surgery, be back to work in 4 days and lose 100 lbs. in a few months with many Top Dr's in many top hospitals, so if one surgeon has too many complaints that can't be explained away you have options. Wishing you well. M
PS...I am the worst at asking the ques. myself. I understand. Write down some ques. and at your appt. just hand it to him or read them. My best to you.
Thanks Michie, for taking so much time to warn me. It was very kind of you to do so. I think I might have seen this special on t.v. also. It has been several months, but the doc hadn't done very many of those surgeries. My family sat me down and made me watch it, in hopes I would change my mind about the surgery. You were kind to have spent so much time trying to get me to ask those questions, and it shows a great deal of human decency you have... above and beyond. Thank you & advice heeded.

I asked the lady in the office today about what I should do for pain relief if I cannot swallow a pill BEFORE surgery. She told me to have my doctor call in a duragesic patch. Does that sound extreme to anyone? How will the patch affect my anesthesia? I really want to wake up after surgery. They have me totally confused. I always thought you shouldn't have morphine before or with anesthesia. Just want to make sure it's okay. And yes, I do plan on asking at pre-op from the actual RN. Help. Thanks again.
