I've decided that I want a break from narcotic pain meds for several reasons; the first is that my tolerance is way too high.
I was wondering if my pain management doc would taper me off the 3 10-mg Percocets I take per day (because they are not working anymore)? I've tried and I'm not good a tapering myself. Should I tell him this? Anyone have any experience here?
All I can say on this is be very careful in exactly what you say to your doc. I have been burned before by using the wrong words which may indicate abuse. After they detect that, and think you are an abuser, which you are not since you want to taper, you can kiss any taper goodbye. good luck. pete.

Thanks for your reply, Pete. Went to my PM doc yesterday. He said he'd be happy to taper me off! He DID ask why and I replied that I wanted to give my body a break from the narcotics and that I was becoming afraid that I was addicted. He then took the time to explain to me the difference between addiction and dependence, drug holidays, etc. Of course, I acted as if I knew NOTHING about anything he was explaining and listened intently.
However, he made it clear that should I choose to do ANYTHING of that nature in the future, to let him know first.
My PM doc also asks to be notified of any surgeries or extensive dental work (or any procedure that will result in an RX for pain meds). He will NOT allow you to have them filled. Period. He will decide if what you are taking is enough to handle the surgical pain.
He wants me to let him know when or if I plan to start back on pain meds before I have my paper script filled, too.
GREAT GUY!
Thanks again for the reply!
My PM doc also said that going off of narcotics (when prescribed) is "bad for the bloodstream". I didn't take the opportunity to ask what he meant by that - you KNOW how you get in the doctor's office.........However, I will call and find out today. This is a new one on me.
Sounds like you have apretty decent doc. My PM doc would not prescribe me anything but Ultram. When I said I had a terrible reaction to it, he told me to call my PCP. PCP had been scripting me 5/500's. Then one day he just would not refill the script. This after like a year of refills. I called the pharm to see if it had been filled and they said the doctor said no more fills. No call or explanation. I think that is pretty irresponsible. He expected me to go cold turkey. I know it wasn't a high dose, but if you've been taking it for a year staright, you're gonna feel something when you stop. To this day, he's never said a word about it to me at other office visits. My husband said I should bring it up, but I don't want to be labeled a seeker or a lunatic. Of course maybe I should bring it up so that another patient gets treated better. And I really like my PCP. He is a nice guy. Kind of shocked me. But, it's been awhile now, and thank goodness for OP's.
