I bought some NAC from my local GNC. The instructions say to take 1-2 twice a day, (they are 600mg each) Just wondering if I should do this or take one with each hydro dose? Ive seen many recommend this supplement to help prevent liver damage from apap, but wasnt sure on dosages? Anyone with any info?
Thanks

Do a search for NAC in all forums going back six months or one year. You will find plenty of posts about this stuff, usually in threads started by yawkaw.
If we're lucky he'll post in this thread with some words of wisdom.

N-Acetyl cysteine. helps liver metabolize acetamenaphen(sp?). local pharmacist told me this is what they give people in ER who try to overdose on tylenol. hope this helps. BTW available at gnc.

It's not good for long-term use because it can change the redox state of your cells. This impairs cell function and probably will kill them over a matter of years, along with making you smell bad. I took it for 3 months and didn't notice any ill effects, but at the time I was a full-blown alcoholic, so maybe it was needed every day!
A better supplement is alpha lipoic acid. It supports the antioxidant network that acetaminophen severely taxes, but it doesn't change the steady state of cells. It also may slow the mental decline seen as we grow older (it does in rats).
There's a reason NAC is for overdoses only and is not the next big thing in health medicine.
