morphine is short for morphine sulfate. The sulfate is the salt it is based in. just like naloxone HCL the drug is based in hydrochorlide. the ending such as bitartate, sulfate and hydroshrolide is just the salt form it is in. the only thing i know about the salts is that it is used by the body in the first pass to brake it into the usable form by the body.

Wow, I didn't actually know that. I know that cytochrome p450s use water, or at least some of them do, but others use salts? Catalytically? Or the salt form is the only form they recognize?

Anyway, without the salt, morphine has an ion with an incomplete set of electrons. This is also called morphine freebase. It's unstable and reactive. Adding the sulfate fulfills the need for electrons, the two chemicals form an ionic bond, and morphine becomes stable and nonreactive.
Chemistry guys, don't just read this in disgust if I'm wrong - please correct me!

Just a helpful tip for those of us who are driven crazy by all-caps & have a hard time reading messages typed in that manner, you can make your own screen fonts appear as large as you want by selecting 'text zoom' (or something named similar, i'm on a Mac) in the 'View' menu if you're using Internet Explorer, or as in my case with Apple's Safari browser I just click 'Make Text Bigger" under the 'view' menu. I can make the text so big that I can read it from across the room without having to resort to all caps. My eyes are sensitive and all-caps messages are darn difficult to read, to say the least. And sorry to say it, but to a lot of net users, all-caps posts are often associated with people who are clueless newbies who don't know it's rude & considered shouting. Sorry to get a little off-topic, but I thought it might be a helpful tip for those of us out here with vision problems.. enlarging font-size is easy and useful and dosn't affect other folks' viewing of it in a normal size/way.

Just my 2¢... I fully understand if you choose to ignore it.. the net still has the illusion of freedom of choice
