Awakening with visual problems
      #182384 - 08/24/04 01:11 AM

I doubt what I'm experiences has anything to do with taking 2 Vicodin ES a day for four years, but my neurologist is stumped so I'd like to ask here.

When I awake in the morning [about 10 hours after taking one of my two Vicodin ES] I am experiencing what is called palinopsia. It is the sensation of seeing something for a moment that has been moved. In this case, what is happening is that if I extend my arm out when laying down and slowly move it from side to side, I see a trail of the vision of my arm following it. It's like a ghost patern in that it's likely 5% in density at most of the vision of the actual arm. I can see straight through it with ease. It is not nystagmus in that my eyes do not bounce.

I have had detailed MRIs and there is nothing going on inside my head. No growhs, no blockages, nothing. It reads clean as a whistle. Plus, with it being in both eyes it is unlikely to be the optic nerve. The neurologist is a top one in NYC with an incredible CV [or a resume]. But he can only now refer me to a neuro-opthalmologist. He has already spoken with him about the case and my meds - I take Neurontin 900 mg a day along with the Vicodin - and he is also puzzled. But as I have heard at times, occassionally it takes quite a bit to isolate what a visual problem truly is being caused by. His next line of thinking is a very mild epilepsy. So it sounds like I'll have some testing for that. But I have no known seizures.

If anyone has ever experienced this [and I never did LSD as I was asked that by the doctor in that hallucenegenics (sp?) done at any time in life could cause problems later] I'd be interested in hearing about your experience.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Wow. When I first started taking Neurontin (2400 mgs/day) I had about a month of dealing with nystagmus, but you say that they've ruled that out. This is extremely fascinating and I'm sure that it's at least somewhat scary for you -- will you keep us informed about their findings? I wish you all the best.

Mike - I don't know about the visual problems but my 35 year old son was put on Neuronton following back surgery. He was in Mass General - top notch place - for 3 days - 3rd day after he was home had a grand mal seizure - and they said Neurontin was the culprit. Be very careful with this medication - it has a LOT of nasty side effects!
