Why does Percocet make me hyper, and Hydro tired?
      #178449 - 08/07/04 05:36 AM

I am just curious. If anyone can answer, why is it that percocet(oxydodone) makes me full of energy and talk a lot like a chatter box, but Vicoden(hydrocodone) makes me feel tired and actually puts me in a bad mood? I thought both substances were pretty close in compounds being that they are Opiate based?
On a side note......someone told me that both percocet and vicoden were synthetic forms of an opiate and the only real medication based from opiates was Morphine. Is this true?

I have found they are quite different. Both tend to make me hyper so to speak but thats usually because I'm painfree.I'm sure someone woth more knowledge will jump in and post the answer you might be looking for...P

Oxycodone and hydrocodone are VERY similar to codeine and morphine. And they are almost identical to each other - the only difference is at a certain place in the molecular structure, where hydrocodone has a hydrogen and oxycodone has a hydroxyl group. Codeine and morphine come directly from opium, and thus are considered true opiates. Though codeine comes in small amounts and usually is synthesized from morphine.

the reson is that evebody's body chemistry is different!!
what effects one person one way may effect another person totaly different.therfore there really is no answer to your question why percocet hypes you up and hydro makes you sleepy.that is just your body and the way these substances effects your body!!!

U must be a chemistry person - I am a Biology person with a Chem minor. Your chem structurs for the substances in question are correct. However, one little molecule of difference in structure can change an individual's reaction to a med a LOT - and even the same meds reactions vary from one individual to another.

I get very hyper from Vicodin and Tylenol #3 - most people get sleepy. I have a photosensitivity to Ativan - break out in hives when in sun - and a huge photosensitivity to Xanax - if take that and go in sun arms swell up like goodyear blimp or something. However, Klonopin and Valium are fine except Klonopin is too strong - am non functional if I take that - so Valium it is when I get strung out.

This is one reason that makes self medicating somewhat dangerous unless you know that your reaction to whatever you have ordered is not going to create some kind of an oddball reaction in your body!

My only answer is that everyone's body chemistry is different and reacts differently to each chemical that we allow to alter it. Hydro flows with my body chemistry while Oxy makes me feel so yucky!

The way hydro makes me feel is changed so much over the years. I can remember when hydro would just make me nauseous and very mean/irritable. Then, it would just make me hyper. Now, it makes me sleepy but happy so since I am on Ritalin, I am sure to take my hydro and Ritalin together so I do have energy back and don't fall asleep.

It's really all trial and error as to what works for you best and what affects you worst and does you bad....

i have had classic adhd for years. dexedrine calms me waaay down, sometimes puts me to sleep. opioids tend to keep me busy and up all night.

guess you could say i'm an "oxy-moron".

sorry 'bout that...

cheers all, c.(angel)

I was on methadone for a couple of months before and after my back surgery.

I literally would not sit down for hours on methadone. It gave me amazing amounts of energy.

It sucked at night because I would literally never sleep.
It kind of freaked me out because I would never sleep and never sit down.

I knew I had to pay all of that back somehow-sitting and sleeping are things I'm pretty good at so to all of a sudden not do or need either made me think I was setting myself up for some kind of crash later on but it never seemed to happen.

The only other time opiates/synthetics gave me energy-and I'm pretty sure this has happened to many of us -is when the Fedex man shows up after you have been out of hydro for a couple of days and you take those first couple of pills.

Getting rid of that crappy feeling for a few more days tends to kick start me for a bit.

hello hope,

that's what i love about this board. i get to meet people who know exactly what i'm going through even though no one else seems to understand.

that is one of the things that my doctor used in determining that i had adhd. he even asked me b/f how dexedrine affected me. the b/f told him that he can tell when i forgot to take my meds every single time. if i don't take them i am angry, unruly, and scatterbrained. he said when i take my dexedrine i totally quiet down. i actually used to take them before i went to bed at night so i could sleep but my doctor advised against that. he said that they weren't effective if i took them before i went to bed. only one time did he allow me to take them at night. it was the night before i had to catch a plane. i hate planes, so he said i could take one to help me sleep. no one else but another adhd sufferer can understand this.

opiates, on the other hand and strangely enough, keep me up all night long. doesn't even matter what kind for me. once in a while i get a 3-day migraine so bad that i have to go to er. if i get a shot of morphine i am up all night long, cleaning, playing (guitar), on the computer, whatever. (that is, until my migraine comes back... nothing gets rid of a full-blown migraine, but opiates make them survivable though a shot of demerol will usually knock me out). otherwise, my back meds do the same thing... only trouble is that i only have (barely)enough for like 4 hours a day so i have to figure which 4 hours each day are the most important, usually i take them at night.

geez, sorry about this post, it's close to midnight and i guess the dexedrine has worn off. what was the question again? (j/k)

nice to meet you, hope. hope you're having a good weekend!

cheers, c.(angel)

Wow. Thanks to all who have answered this post. I am currently tapering from percocet. I am down to 25mg (which is 2 and a half 10 mg pills) My doc has the script written to be taken three times a day(which would be 30mg a day). For the past 5 days I have been down to this 25mg dosage. Well, I have found that my big problem with tapering completly is on Friday and Saturdays, reason being I don't have to work the next day and I am awake longer than weeknights. So basically Mon thru Fri I can taper with no problem. It is the weekends that put a stop to my taper. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

The good thing is that I finally realized that I don't have a problem.I am taking less than what my doctor tells me to take, and that sets my mind at ease. I just wish that my back didn't hurt anymore, and I wish I was the same old Jeff that I used to be before the night (of the accident) that changed my life forever.

They both (hydro and oxy) make me speedy and talkatave. Sometimes so much that its hard to control it.

I have often wondered if that is a common trait among similar types of people or not.

Very informative thread.
