Substitute for Percocet........Vicoden or Lorcet?
      #176596 - 07/28/04 06:36 PM

I have a simple question. If my new doctor decides to take me off Percocet, which I have been on for one year, what should I ask for instead. Vicoden or Lorcet/Lortab? which is more equal to Percocet?

Hi,
Either is good, but my preference is lorcet 10/650. My Dr. had me on percoset and then switched me to vicoan es. I think lorcett 10/650 works better, but that is just my opnion, and this is what I get now.

Vicoden and Lorcet have the same ingredient--Hydrocodone, that is just different manufacturers, it comes in 5/500, 7.5/500, 10/325, 10/500, and 10/650. (hydrocodone/apap)

I prefer percocet 10/325, but if I have a choice on hydrocodone, I prefer 10/325 also.

Thank you to everyone who replied. I did not know that Lortab was the same thing as Vicoden. I don't think my doctor will cut me off of the percocet. He has sent me to see a PM&R(Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) Specialist. I was in a fatal car accident last summer and my back is still severly injured.
On a side note, he is a young doctor who I chose to see after my old doctor retired. These younger doctors are so scared to write prescriptions it is unbelievable. He had me sign a "controlled substances" contract before he would continue writing scripts for the Percocet. On top of that when I need a refill, I have to have an appointment with him. So my wallet gets lighter........every month I have to see him,pay $20 for the office visit, and $20 for the medication. My old doctor was just a phone call and then go pick up my script. It is unbelievable!!!

Thanks for listening, Jeff

Ya gotta love those "old" doctors. My "old" dentist used to prescribe Percocet every time he did some major mouth work on me. He retired and his daughter took over. She's an awesome dentist, but her solution to all pain is "take tylenol". If I didn't like her so much I'd change dentists!

I agree about the older docs... My mother-in-law has steel rods in her back and her old doc would, with no problem, prescribed her roxicodone. New doc took over and tried 10 diff. pain meds and even put her on methadone to help come off the roxi. He was not very compassionate. She then went to a pain clinic at our hospital and now has no problems keeping her RX current (with only a check up every 6 months) and they will giver her "trigger point injections" to try and keep her pain under control. Only problem is finding a local pharmacy that is willing to stock it for her... They are too scared that someone will try to break in and steal it.... She ended up going through an old "corner pharmacy" not a chain. They are more willing and able to help people and not freak out everytime she needs a refill.

Funny you should mention the old dentist and his daughter taking over his practice. Our dental practice did the same thing, only it's his daughter who has no problem prescribing Percocet, when her father would prescribe Tylenol 3. My boyfriend had 2 of his wisdom teeth removed, one about a year ago, and the other one last month. Both times, she prescribed him 30 Percs. 30 of them!! For one tooth. The second one was a little bit more painful for him, but still, I honestly thought it was nearly impossible to get a doctor or dentist to prescribe Percocet anymore, much less 30 of them. When my sister had dental surgery last year, her dentist only gave her 10. Guess she should have stuck to our old dentist.
