My Doc
      #176909 - 07/30/04 08:13 AM

I have to share my experience with you. Yesterday I had an appointment with my doc. The reason given was to change my meds, vicodin. I have been on 7.5/500 6xday for a while. I have been taking a few more than prescribed and kept running out. So I told the doctor I have been doing this and complained about the pharmacy doing there job and not dispensing early, I told him I wanted to increase my script. I was expecting a speech about abuse/addiction, liver damage or something along those lines. Instead I got a new script, and a speech about how are next step is a stronger narcotic that requires a triple script and a monthly visit. So needless to say I walked out with 10/500 8xday. There are still doctor's who understand, I wish you all could see him........

Related to this post is a question I have. I filled my #100 script at a chain store in town. I got big pink suckers made by Qualitest. They are very soft, and weak. Anyhow I have another #500 to be filled at this pharmacy. What do you think they would say at the pharmacy is I asked them to order some Mally's.......any feedback is welcomed..........

OH yea buy the way, if you dont mind me asking what is wrong with you for a doctor to prescribe 8 10mg tabs a day???? That is double what i take!!!!!And i have lots of neck and shoulder and upper back pain as well as severe lowe back pain, and bad pain in the upper hip region!!!!!!

THANKS POPPYALE

Go to a private pharmacy and ask them for the brand you want.

penzam1535 -

I agree with Therion .... 4000mg APAP per day is the cut-off! Beyond that is just asking for trouble (and acute liver failure is no joke!) It is hard for me to believe any MD would prescribe doses of Vicodin (or any hydrocodone/APAP combination) with that high a concentration of APAP. The 4000 mg figure is well-known and accepted - and many docs want pts to stay far below that. There may also be a cumulative long-term deleterious effect from taking APAP (
Another thing which perplexes me: Most docs, if you needed that level of pain relief, would go to a stronger pain med rather than Hydrocodone with that much APAP.... It is my impression that, generally, they would try to use Oxycodone or Oxycontin or Morphine timed-release drugs (MS Contin). I would imagine he/she would do some sort of work-up to determine the etiology of your pain - and possibly refer you to a pain managment specialist or clinic..

Just my thoughts..... Good luck!

Quite true! But I think right now many docs just don't want to pull out a triplicate pad anymore...

Look at all the doctors we are reading about...

It sounds like you have a great doc, but I have to agree that the APAP is right at the max limit. I'd worry about taking that much APAP long term. I worry that I take too much APAP (around 1500-2000 mg) and that is half the amount you are prescribed. Can you ask your Doctor to change the prescription to Norco with the next refill? That would cut the dosage down to about 2600mg a day. I take an ibuprofen with my hydro and that seems to increase the pain relief. I also agree that you should probably be on something stronger for your pain.

Gotta love your doc though! Not many docs will prescribe 250 hydros a month nowadays. He sounds like a very compassionate and understanding doctor.

You should look into taking some milk thistle herb and CoEnzyme Q10 to help protect your liver and kidneys.

As far as the brand, Mallies made me sick to my stomach, which was a shame, as they really seemed effective for my pain. But they'd make me sweaty, queasy, dizzy, and sometimes, I'd vomit after taking them. If you've had the mallies before and they didn't get your stomach upset, you should call around and find a pharmacy that has them or the Watson generics and get the prescription filled there.

I appreciate all of your input. Unfortunatly I haven't any insurance, so basically i'm limited to the weaker meds. I have priced the OXY brands and in my area they want roughly $350 for #60 40/mg. It doesnt matter what way I work it 2400/mg whether it's 20's, or 80's they are too Best if kept off the board expensive.

If you cannot afford OxyContin, Purdue will assist you with the cost. Some people pay almost NOTHING for it. For more information, go here:
