buprenorphine tends to cause less respiratory depression than most opiates however it would still be advisable to use lower doses of other respiratory depressants along with it (ie. benzos). in other words, there shouldn't be any serious interactions but it would still be advisable to proceed with caution.

DO NOT USE ANY BENZOS WITH BUPE!!!!!!!
This combination could be deadly. I was told by my doctor (I'm on suboxone now) that taking xanax or anything like that could kill me. For some reason they react very badly with the bupe and would cause severe respititary (sp?)depression. Just passing on what I have told.
Take care,
Myrrine

The doctor is just being cautious and also doesn't want you on a drug of abuse.
It is totally acceptable to take benzos while on Suboxone, I did it my first two weeks or so.
There is nothing unique about Suboxone that means it can't be mixed with opioids- like all opioids, you could end up killing yourself if you take too much with too many benzodiazepines. But is not different than any other opioid in that respect- that is a risk you take across the board when you mix the two.
One thing to keep in mind is that you may oversedate yourself as you don't really "feel" bupe...so you may not realize your breathing is slower than it appears to be. Just be careful, there is no drug interaction or anything other than excess sedation, if you play it safe and don't huge doses of either you'll be fine.
Edit: I didn't even realize it was you, KKB- I just read the post and responded. Glad to hear you're on Suboxone- How've you been? Send me an email or PM or something.

My brother takes Buprenorphine AND another med that is in the benzo family, I'm not sure about the spelling, but it is something like Koladapin?? But he takes them both on a daily basis. He gets his Buprenorphine from a pain management doc, and he gets his Koladapin from a psychiatrist (for panic attacks), BUT his Pain management doc not only prescribes him buprenorphine, but he also writes him a prescription for #60 Xanax and #31 Soma. He doesn't take either one of those though, I guess he doesn't like the xanax, I guess the Kp works better for him.

I AM SOOOO confused! I'm on suboxone 8mg. for 8 days now..My doctor, (who I found on the "approved physicians" link) is a total psyco!!!! Yesterday at my apt he yelled at me for not bringing my drug screen results in with me.....He never mentioned it OR wrote me an order! Good grief, he forgot & yelled at me!....He requires I bring my appointment card in and give it to him also??? What's up with that? There's lots of RIDICULOUS stuff, but enough, I'm just venting ..... Here's my problem: I ask my regular MD if he would take the suboxone course so he could prescribe it for me. After researching, He said he couldn't with out taking several other courses. One was a special addiction medicine license , I really can't remember what it was, but there were 4 things he had to do and/or have in order to comply with federal regulations?????? Does anyone know about this? Is it diffferent from state to state? I'd love to know because he was Extremely interested (called me 3 times at home asking ME QUESTIONS..LOL...) HE wanted to do this in HIS PRACTICE & to help me out! (I drive 2 1/2 hrs each way for my sub) So.... you all who are getting it from a pain management doctor, and/or family pcp, tell me what qualifications they had to get, please. I love this medicine but I HAVE to change doctors!
Also, I AM taking BENZOS with suboxone..no problem! HOWEVER, the first sub place I called said their doctor would not take you if you were on benzos or ANYTHING besides opiates....go figure? Thanks in Advance!--Hope
