hypoglycemia
      #172246 - 07/02/04 01:51 AM

I have been doing much research on this issue and am concerned about the wide range of what is acceptable to be considered in a "normal" range. Has anyone here any info on this subject? I normally have a blood glucose level of about 60-75, but when I took it an hour ago it was up to 167. It is all over the place and I have had my test monitor re-calibrated at my hospital so I know it is okay. I do get symptoms - tiredness, sweating, dizziness, nervousness, feelings of passing out when it is low. It runs in my family. I am 5'6" and weigh 120. Does anyone really know if I am in need of seeking immediate help? When I was pregnant almost 3 years ago, I had gestational diabetes and I made them do the test over because my sugar has always been low. Well, they re-did the test, just to find out my level was close to 300 and within 1 hour did not change. So, I guess eventually, I will end up with this problem as many of my family members are overweight and 4 that I can think of off the top of my head already have it and are insulin dependent. Any help would be appreciated. I have done so much homework, but coming from someone who has experienced it would be so much more helpful to me. Thank you all in advance for you help!!!!!

I do think what you are describing does sound more like diabetic episodes rather than hypoglycemia. When a blood sugar falls below 80 some can feel shaky, sweaty, and basically weird. But hypoglycemics rarely reach a blood sugar of 167. There diets usually are 6 smaller meals a day to prevent the blood sugar from dropping. But on the bright side, just because you had a blood sugar of 167 does not in any way mean your diabetic. My best friend is a juvenile onset brittle diabetic and we had went to the county fair and after coming home, she wanted to test her blood sugar because she had a corn dog, hers was 180 something and just for chuckles I had her test mine and mine was 360.(I had cotton candy) So I immediately freaked, made an appointment with a doctor and told him, he basically laughed cause he said of course a cup of sugar will make you blood sugar go up. He said to check it upon rising before eating for 3 days, if it fell between 70 -120 thats good. Well mine was always 50-60, so they did some kind of glucose test and you fast then they test you, give you some yucky orange liquid, then repeat it twice after an hour each time and take your blood sugar after each cocktail. Mine fell in blood sugar and they said I was more towards hypoglycemic, it was suppose to raise to the amount of carb in the cocktail, and remain level. But I only have episodes when I dont eat for a long time. You probably already test your blood sugars in the am, but maybe start logging it and have it checked out, sometimes its just a matter of diet. I too have diabetics (insulin dependent) in my family as well as exhusband, and 2 close friends so it makes you aware that you are not immune. My one friend goes from high to low irratically, and it can be scary (the low part)Sorry if I ramble but the Diabetic association is near and dear in my heart. Good luck to you!

As a nurse I second all that was posted above. I would add that checking your level (by stick) needs to be done WHEN you rise, first of all, and at the same time....(if possible) everyday.
The levels are always going to be effected by taking them before meals or after meals, as well as, physical activity, exercise, or even accompanying illness. Just as you know the food itself ,that you intake, will matter.
Have you tried following a specific diet for a couple of weeks and consistently taking glucose levels? There are some great plans out there for 2,000 calorie diets and so on. Maybe that would help you get your true bearings on a read.
One more thing, I know you said you had the glucometer calibrated at your local hospital, but are you able to test the calibration yourself? I have always tested the glucometers daily or atleast every two days. You wouldn't believe how out of wak they can get. JUST A THOUGHT.
Sorry to not be able to help more.

I am so glad you brought this up! I have been suffering some very strange symptoms myself...SUDDEN "seeing stars" feeling that makes me feel as if I am about to lose consciousness, sudden, short bursts of sweating, malaise, INTENSE sugar cravings, and low blood pressure (which was also a sudden change as I have been on high blood pressure meds for 2 years--but haven't needed to take them now for about 4 months)...

I hadn't considered hypoglycemia. I was thinking it was methadone related (as I had similar symptoms in the past when I was on much higher doses of it.)

I believe I will call my doctor.

Thank you all for your responses - I appreciate them very much! So, based on what I have read, fluctuating as much as I do is not normal? Would normal be considered testing at any point of the day and falling w/in the same range by approximately 10-20 points? I guess what I am asking is two-fold: 1) what is a normal range for blood glucose and 2) if you did not have any problem at all w/sugar levels, no matter what time of day or what you ate should not affect your glucose level so dramatically that the point spread could be 100? Thanks for your feedback. By the way, I have been taking my sugar in the morning before eating and it could be anywhere from 49-70, but after eating - especially carbs like spaghetti, it can shoot up to the 160 range. It just seems so abnormal to me.......
Thanks everyone!
