      #175823 - 07/23/04 08:14 PM

I really need to quit smoking, and I was wondering if anyone had success with any particular prescription? I have quit several times, but I can not maintain.

anyone, anyone?

once when i tried to quit i used wellbutrin....well that didnt work it made me a devil...i tried the patches and the step thing....didnt work for me but then i tried the nicatrol inhaler and it did help me some to quit then i said what the H**L im gonna start back up anyways and i quit that time but i have also found doing it without anything is better because your not putting the same stuff in your body like you do when u inhale a cig so cold turkey worked great with me for 2 years...its something that you want to do and you want to want it really bad

I have no will power and smoke like a freight train some days. The closest I have come to successfully quitting is hospitals stays and being broke. I mean broke like, no vehicle, no gas money and no smokes money.
Then I just start again. The Wellbutrin did me like it did Daeshay, the devil comes out ten-fold. The patches blister me terrible and the gum didn't work either.
Pure will-power and the desire is the only thing that is 100%.
Wish I could say different. This is all, of course, my humble opinion.

If you find the "magic bullet" please let me know. Can stick to diet, exercise, etc etc - but absolutely NO willpower or anything seems to help with stopping smoking!

I quit recently. I used quitnet.com. Great site, good advice. Used patch and a lot of online support. It's a struggle, but worth it. Best of luck.

It takes two things!

Will Power
and
Moral Support

Products and drugs may take the edge off, but you have got to have the determination to do it.

It's not YOUR problem (I hope that)
It's not MY problem (I know that)

But it is still OUR problem and WE know that!

If the Nicoret (sp?) chewing gum asked me to, I'd do a free add.

After 30+ years it worked for me.

.. but like someone above said, you have to want to.

I wholeheartedly agree.

Willpower and a very determined motivation to really STOP!!!

This combined with the patch helped me quit an eleven year, two pack a day habit almost six years ago.

It CAN BE DONE.. It is very hard (at times I think it was harder than giving birth), but it can be done.

I honestly do not think I would have succeeded without the patch, sheer will, and the wonderful support of my husband who quit at the same time I did.

Honestly, the worst thing I ever did was start smoking and the best thing I ever did was quit.

Trust me, if I could quit (chain smoking chimney), then you can do it.

I wish you the best. Buy the patch, enlist your friends and family to help, get rid of all your triggers, and GO FOR IT!!!

Good Luck!!!!

i smoked for 20 years. i got sick of the smell, and really scared of getting cancer (just had my first kid, changes your perspective....) anyway, I used the Nicoderm patch. It's a three stage reduced strength application. I didn't read the instructions well, and ended up taking the first stage dose for twice as long as I should have (i secretly believe this is why it worked for me :-) i was enjoying it so much, i didn't care about quitting). I haven't had a smoke for 9 years, and could not for the life of me think of doing it. I've heard wellbutrin is used for this purpose as well.

good luck, it's a great burden to shed!

I know several people who have had success with Zyban. I haven't tried it myself, but at 35, I feel like I need to quit smoking soon. We all have so much pain on these boards, that we should probably do all we can do to avoid more pain from lung cancer and emphysema. It is hard though.

I also heard of a method of quitting that is supposed to work really well, called Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. It is a book that you can get from Amazon.com and a whole bunch of people have reviewed it and gave it a really good rating! It got a 5 star rating from 73 people who reviewed it which is kind of unusual on Amazon that everyone agrees! Here is the link to the out of print edition that is selling used for 29.95. There is a new edition coming out for $14.95 that you can preorder though. Here is a link to the book on Amazon where you can read the reviews. It sounds very intriguing. Supposedly, by the time you finish the book, you never smoke again. I'm going to preorder a copy! You may also be able to find a cheap copy on eBay or in a used book store.

When I quit, I tapered off of them. I cut out one cig per day (was smoking a pack a day) until I got down to 5 then I changed to ultra lights. I was at one a day right before bedtime for a while and then I quit that one too.

My husband, mother, and father however have tried everything and they always go back to it. You have to really, really, really want to quit BAD.
