I found this in our local paper. I have always worried about this when I travel.

What I do when traveling is to take any controlled substances and put them at the BOTTOM of a bottle of laxatives, Melatonin, vitamins, etc - no one EVER looks in a bottle of Laxatives!!!!!!!!!!!

I live in the Spokane area and my brother is in the Navy, so he flies here a few times a year. A couple months ago when he flew back to San Diego he noticed all of his DVD's had been stolen from his luggage. He had around 200 DVD's in a cd case. It could have happened at Spokane or San Diego, but we'll never know.

How sad that even the baggage handlers can be thieves.

Just take your medication with you through security (IN IT'S CORRECT prescription bottle with your name on it).

Any other way of transporting controlled medication is illegal. Don't worry, if you have your medication with your carry on baggage, nothing will happen. I go on many trips for buisness and just this last week I had the full search team on me, because I was picked for this new special search, that only 1 in 100 people get. It took 35 minutes to complete and I had my medication with me. They asked if I had any IV needles in my baggage or on me (I said no).. Then I said, I do however have my medication with me, in case you were wondering about that. I said this, because I was assuming they wanted to know about needles either for diabetes (sp) patients or other substances of the illegal nature. I figured since I was getting searched high and low, I would just come out with that statement and see what they had to say. They said, they weren't concerned with my medication nor my medical need for it, so long as I had the medication in their correct container with my name on it. I said yes of course and that was that..

35 minutes later I left with my bags completely in a mess, but nothing more. Don't worry about these things guys / gals ( unless you have illegal prescriptions, ect). They want bombs and wepons, not medication.

i agree. now, whenever i travel i ALWAYS take all my meds on one of my carry-on bags, especially my dexedrine and whatever "hard to refill" narcotics i have to bring. everything i have i have prescriptions for and i keep them separate from each other... in other words, i don't try to save space by putting my fioricets/codeine in my dexedrine bottle. i have never got them checked, they mostly look for firearms, knives, etc. to bother with meds, but just in case....

also, another reason to keep your meds with you at all times in your carry-on luggage is in case the airport misplaces or loses your check-in bags. happened to me before. took almost 4 days for them to find my luggage and return it to me. clothes and personal items are easy to replace, but i was w/o my meds for 4 days! you don't want to be miserable at any time but especially when you're on a trip!!!!!

best wishes to all!

cheers, c.(angel)

Hey Tred! They probably asked about the needles to make sure they didn't get stuck while rifling through your personal belongings!! I hate air travel, I feel like Big Brother is watching (he is).

I always keep my meds in the appropriate bottles in my purse or in a carry on bag. I flew from San Fransisco to Nashville once and my luggage arrived a week later. Of course my jewlery was in the luggage I checked. Needless to say it wasn't all there when my luggage finally arrived. You know where my priorities lie! LOL Now I pack jewelry, meds and cosmetics in my carry on bag. I haven't had a problem since.

From everything I read, I am assuming this person was working as a screener checking carry-ons. How can you stop this from happening?

Take care,
Mad

Well, when they wanted to catch her, they put up cameras and it worked. You would think in today's climate they would have those cameras going 24/7, especially in the area where bags are checked...

I think the person was the checker with the luggage that is checked. They also do various luggage checks with checked in luggage, so my take on this story was this type of person. I could be wrong, but I don't see how a regular screener at security could steel meds when the person would be right there looking at them.

Don't know for sure.. Anyone know this?

I think the screener is one that works in the back when your bags go on to the conveyor belt and go behind the counters...they x-ray them back there.

I know I speak for many here in that if I ever caught someone trying to remove my meds from my carry-on, I would personally tear their head off (and spit in the stump, but that's just me ).....

I believe she worked in the area where they screen/xray luggage that is checked and not in the area we as travelers go through. But I have also heard she worked in the terminal where we walk through security. I am so confused right now my head hurts

I get a little defensive when it comes to my stuff (meds or otherwise). Quick story....we went to a Six Flags a few months ago. Before going through the metal detector, I handed the rent-a-guard my little pill tin. As I was walking through, I saw he was starting to open the tin. I screamed "Stop That!", and grabbed it from him. He literally jumped. I lectured him about opening up other people's stuff and that if he wanted it opened, I would have done it for him. I understand security and all that, it's just that we as Americans, have SOME rights left (for now anyway). He handed me back the tin and I was on my way
