Need Some Advice, Please!!
      #172045 - 07/01/04 06:47 AM

I hope I don’t go on too long here, but the fact that this whole thing is so convoluted is basically part of my problem.

Over 30 years ago, I was involved in an accident, injured my neck with a condition diagnosed as “spasmodic torticollis” at the time. I was admitted to the hospital by an orthopedist and spent 28 days in there with 3 pounds of traction. One week after discharge, I was admitted by a neurologist to another hospital for a week where I underwent a myelogram and was placed on 5 pounds of traction. I was then readmitted to the first hospital for two weeks with 5 pounds of cervical traction AND pelvic traction (by this time, I was told that my lower spine was now out of whack). Although my neck finally straightened up, the pain never went away, and I eventually just gave up and endured the pain. I have always done work involving a typewriter or computer, and that just makes it worse. I’ve lost a lot of jobs due to sick days because I was in such pain. In addition to all this, I was diagnosed about ten years later with TMJ, which the doctor believed was a congenital condition. In the past three decades, I’ve literally been on everything from A (Ativan) to Z (Zanaflex).

Back in 1995 my gallbladder went “belly up” on me and I had to have it removed. It was a laparoscopic procedure and I was only supposed to be in the hospital overnight. Sometime after surgery, I apparently started to bleed internally (had a BP of 60/40) and was rushed to the OR again where an open procedure was performed, followed by serial blood transfusions.

Shortly after that surgery, I began to develop pain. Part of the pain seemed to be near my incision site, although it was very hard to pinpoint. I really thought it was GYN related. My GYN prescribed Darvocet, which didn’t even begin to touch the pain. My GYN retired a few years later, and in 2000, I underwent a tubal ligation with the doctor who replaced him. During that surgery, she noted extensive adhesions which she said were probably a result of my gallbladder surgery. I still had the abdominal pain, as well as the neck pain, and she prescribed Vicodin ES. Voila! That was the very first drug I was given that actually CONTROLLED my pain, neck AND abdominal. A year after my tubal, in 2001, I wound up with a prolapsed uterus and had to have a hysterectomy by the same doctor. She gave me Percocet when I was discharged from the hospital, but I felt it was too strong and actually asked her to change it to Vicodin ES.

Two years ago, before I knew I could order it on line, I relocated to the opposite side of the state. I went to a “good doc” (I was told). He gave me a script for 30, along with a lecture, implying I didn’t really NEED the medicine. I went back to him two more times (the last being 1-1/2 years ago) and then discovered I could buy this medicine on line, without enduring humiliation and judgmental lectures. I’m 51 years old. I’m not a junkie. I’ve never even smoked pot. I don’t take this medicine every day. If I’m not working, I find I don’t need it at all. It’s definitely related to the neck/head problem. I’m in pain almost all the time from the adhesions, and when they are particularly bad, I will take it around the clock, but that averages to only one or two days a month.

Since all this time, I’m now a medical transcriptionist who works from home. I’ve had this job for three years now, and during the past year, I’ve become one of the highest producers the company has, consistently receiving bonuses. (My pay stubs corroborate this timeline.) The ONLY reason I’m doing so well at my job is BECAUSE I’ve been able to order hydrocodone on line.

Needless to say, when I moved, I didn’t bring medical records with me. Even if I did, they wouldn’t necessarily address my problems. The problem with my neck occurred 30 years ago, and after the initial six months, I just gave up and lived with the pain. The problem with the adhesions didn’t develop until 1995, and I sought help from my gynecologist, since I didn’t know what the cause really was until 2001. At that time, she referred me to the surgeon who performed the gallbladder surgery. I never did that because I moved within a few months after that.

As I said, I work from home and barely leave my house. I’d be totally willing to have someone come here and examine me. I haven’t established with anyone else in this area because, other than this constant pain, I’m basically healthy, and I’m just tired of being misjudged and treated with suspicion as I was with the one doctor I saw here.

Does anyone have any experience with a company that could accommodate my needs? I had been using BuyMeds.com, which I found to be excellent, but they have closed. I’ve read the lists and some of them say “no medical records, no problem” while at the same time, elsewhere in the ad, they say you MUST have medical records. I've also been in contact with companies who want me to have the form filled out by an urgent care center. There IS no urgent care center in the area where I live! I've called everyone and asked.

I’m sorry I rattled on so long and appreciate any help you can offer. By the way, thank you very much for this wonderful site.

From reading your post, it is my guess that you have degenerative disk disease or some other condition that is diagnosable with a couple of tests.

If you have insurance this would be a good time to use it.
If you can get an MRI, you may well find out what is causing you this chronic pain. And you may find a local pain management doctor to help you.

If not a local PM, you would have at the least a diagnosis and recent records which would be beneficial to you during a consult.
Even an Xray can show DDD or other bone abnormalities.
Try a different local doc. Explain your painful history.
Surely, someone will take steps to find out what is causing you this pain. And perhaps even treat you.
