Reason for DHC/Contugesic shortage
      #170768 - 06/24/04 02:23 PM

I was wondering why suddenly early 2004 Contugesic seemed to vanish from IOP world. The few suppliers that were left sold it at extraordinary prices.

The reason is simply, the time-released DHC ist patented by Mundipharma (partner of Perdue, both having the rights on Oxycontin) and they license it in several countries. In Spain it was licensed to Asta Medica and for to me unknown reasons they don't have that license anymore.

That means, currently there is no DHC manufacturer in Spain anymore. I really hope someone will continue making it, for DHC is a very good med I think and mostly quite cheap.

DHC was first synthetized in early '900 si it woulD surprise me if they still had a valid patent. Same goes for the time release system...even Purdue's on OCs expired...and there are several ways to make a time release version of a med....What I heard from Spain is that it was rescheduled upwads, hence the difficulties in supplying the gray area of OPs. I don't exclude pressure from the US too, as that med flooded your country through the IOP channel. I'm sure that didn't go unnoticed. Just my two cents.

Dihydrocodeine (DHC) can still be purchased, just not the time release brand.

That's right, the substance itself isn't patented anymore, as like you said it was first synthesized in the early 1900's by Knoll. But at least I have never seen any other time-released brand than the Mundipharma one. They appear under different names, but all look the same, oblong with DHC and mg imprint.

I don't know about rescheduling, but that there is no manufacturer anymore in Spain did come straight from Pharma24 and I think they know what's really up.

I know there are still a few OPs left who sell it, but not at those prices I was used to. I did pay around $0.5 per 60mg and so I don't feel like paying almost twice as much now.

Pressure by US could be another problem though, why do they always have to tell others what to do (and those other countries even do as they were told...).
