I live on a small island and cannot get to see a doc unless I fly somewhere, so I have a cabinet full of stuff...
I often get acute abdominal pain and normally Codydramol (DHC 10mg + 500 APAP) gets rid of it enough so I'm not in agony.
Didn't work this time so I tipped the whole medicine cabinet out and took 2 Codydramol and 2 Ultram (50mg tabs). It was quite awesome, not in a floaty, trippy way, but the pain completely went for several hours and then I slept for like a year.
The next day I told my mum (nurse) what I'd done and she flipped saying I probably OD'd. But DHC and Ultram are completely different compounds, no??
Anyway, turns out my DHC is 6 months out of date and my Ultram is 4 years out of date so maybe neither of them really worked and it was all in my head.
BUT, if they were both un-expired, is that OD potential? Should I not have taken them together?
Some detailed enlightenment would be appreciated.
Many thanks
PS. in the end flew out to a doc (as I ran out of Ultram) and he gave me Pethidine/Demerol shot and some Percocet. The Percocet are doing nothing for me pain wise what gives? DHC 10mg stronger than Percocet?

Percoset is quite a bit stronger than DHC. I doubt that you OD'd, especially since they were outdated, as outdated meds usually lose potency. But then, Ultram is a strange med, and differnet people react strangely to it. Still, that is a small amount to have OD'd on it.

No you didn't OD. As the PP said, Ultram is a STARNGE med. It could have been the expired Ultram that got to you BUT...most meds, yes MOST, are good (90-95% efficiacy) four years and beyond their expiration date. Hydrocodone especially is notoriously hard to break down. Right from the manufacturer, hydro (Brand Lortab) is good -per the FDA for 6 years at 100%. Remember this is mandated that all meds must have an expiration date. What benefit does Watson, or Mallincrodt (Lortab brand) have to give their med a 10 year shelf life? None. They love meds to expire and the pharm. to have to purchase a new batch.
Now, that being said...I doubt your Ultram was bad, ut partaining to your DHC, Ultram and DHC are BOTH opiate effectors so you probably recieved "over-adequate" pain relief. Is their such thing?
Sorry for the rant, it's late...I'm tired.

Thanks for the info... still, another day on and many Percocets not helped with the pain, but DHC has.... odd as Percs are said to be stronger (the Percs are 'new' as well!)

I, or the person I told what I'd taken, used OD'd to mean doubled up or taken too many of the same thing - 'over-dosed' myself, rather than over-dosed and died!! Or I guess I wouldn't be writing

It is strange how certain people react differently. Some people do so great with hydro and others say Ultram is stronger. And some think the Percecet are so strong, but it isn't helping this member! I personally prefer Tylenol 3 to Lortab, it seems to help better, but according to everything that I have read, Lortab is supposed to be much stronger. I guess different things work better with different body chemistries.
As far as outdated pills, I've taken pills that were 5 or 6 years old that I found in my medicine cabinet, and they were still effective.
I've heard that some people have hallucinations from Ultram!
Morph, I hope you feel better soon!
