Need assistance:
So I'm not quite sure what to do. I had a prescription for hydrocodone with one refill. I had it filled at a pharmacy that I had never been to before, and paid in cash since I didn't have my new insurance card from work yet. I had it filled once and also got the refill. When I went to get the refill, they were out of that med, so the pharmacist had me go to another location to pick it up over the weekend. This was on Saturday. My dentist said he got a call from the pharmacy on Monday asking if there was a refill on the prescription and so he said yes. I just got a call from this pharmacy and they said my refill is available to pick up (now Wednesday) I asked how many refills were originally on it and they said there was only the one fill, no refills, which is why they called the doctor on Monday to ask if there was another one (after I had already filled a refill, mind you). When he said yes, I guess they filled it
again. I'm so confused. Is this a trick to get me to pick up an extra prescription? Is it possible someone else went it for me on Monday to ask for a refill, which is what caused all this? I can't imagine that they wouldnt know if I had picked up 1 prescription with 1 refill, that there wouldnt be any left. Which is why I'm wondering if when they called the dentist, they got his "ok" to fill another one? I'm scared im going to walk in there and after I pick it up, they'll call my dentist and tell them I got a refill I wasn't entitled to. And I dont want to ask about more details and make it a bigger deal than it is. Let's be honest, I would like to pick it up if I'm not doing anything wrong. But if its going to get my called out - no way! Is it possible they just don't update their records in real time to know that I had already picked up a refill, or did the call to the dentist eliminate that problem? Advice?

Definitely not your fault. Mixups do happen. At least this one was in your favor

Personally, I'd be cautious... they DO have computers to figure that sort of thing out... I'd simply ask the pharmacist when they got the OK to do the refill and if it was after you already got your last fill, sounds like it was intentional. If it was before... you could wind up in trouble. Just my .02.

well my problem is that obviously, with insurance, they would never have let a 6 day supply be refilled if it was filled on saturday. i didnt give them my insurance so there aren't restictions that way, but that is why im worried b.c cant they see that i got something filled 2 weeks ago, again on saturday and then on wednesday (for example?) and if they do notice, then would they call the doctor? im so confused.

and then are you saying i am ok, or not ok? you said that if they called me, i must have been "oked" but then you said to not go back. why?
they called my doc on monday (i got a call from them and the office had just gotten off the phone with the pharm.). they said i had an original fill with no refills that i tried to call in last thursday. i think on thurday i called to see when i was able to fill it again, but i actually only went it to get my original refilled on saturday and they filled it at that time. that is why i was surprised/confused that they called on monday to ask if there was another fill on it? when i called today, they said i didnt have any refills listed on my original prescription. yet, when i went in on saturday, they filled it and it was marked as 1 refill avaiable on my bottle.

As tempting as it is to pick them both up, I WOULDN'T. In fact, I would do the responsible thing and notify the dentist that something got mixed up. Notify the dentist that the pharmacy mysteriously "lost" your refills after the first refill, and that you have JUST picked up the 1st refill when they called you AGAIN and said the refill was ready. I would simply ask if he could call the pharmacy and negate the original refills and re-authorize 2 more fills for you at the appropriate time.
They will think that you are an honest, responsible patient and I bet this will give you a proverbial gold star in that dentist's book!
It's up to you, but you could lose all future fills if you pick this 2nd one up and they find out about the "mistake."

my deductive resoning may be off:
I may be wrong but it sounds like they gave you the first fill. 1 refill left. they got there meds instock and filled your refill hence 0 refills. so you are not getting extra refills just both fills close together..
in that case you are ok to pick it up

actually - i filled one last week and then got my refill a week and a few days later (this saturday), well within a reasonable amount of time for getting a script refilled for dental work. for some weird reason my doc's office got a call on monday, after i had already gotten my fill and refill (and thus, out of fills) asking if there was another one, and my doc said there was. how could the pharmacist not know that i had already gotten both of them?

What is sounds like to me is the original pharmacist who was out of the med and sent you elsewhere left a note for the next pharmacist that this script was unfilled yet and needs to be filled as soon as the med arrives. Pharmacies have a "waiting" pile for meds they are out of... He probably just forgot he sent you elsewhere, left it in the pending file and went home. The next day when your med arrived, a new pharmacist came in checked the "waiting" file and went to fill your script. That's when he realized the computer says no more refills (because you actually had it filled Saturday). He must have assumed this was a mistake and just to be sure, called the dentist. The dentist had no idea what went on and said "Yes, I gave him a refill"...
I know it sounds complicated but to someone who has worked in a pharmacy, it sounds logical to me...
Should you pick them up?
Well, it is already filled and sitting in the bin awaiting customer pickup so chances are they will not look at your computer file again until you come in with another prescription and everything will be OK...
BUT...
If you live in a state that uses monitoring systems or triplicate prescriptions, it could come back to bite you...
Personally, if I like the dentist and wanted to sleep at night for the next month, I would not do it...

i figured it must have been something like that. no monitoring in my state - at least not that i've been able to identify from the websites that have the states that do - and i will never go back to this pharmacy again. ha. i dunno. i guess i was thinking that regardless, they called and got acceptance from the doc, and then filled it and thats that. do they go back and revisit old prescriptions to file later possibly?
thanks so much guys for all your help!

also, the pharmacist that told me they were out called the other store and said they had it, and transfered it over there. if that makes any difference....

I have been in your situation before. Just go pick up your meds and don't worry about it. As far as you know everything is okay and it's not your fault they did what what they did. You are not going to get into any trouble. You will pick up your meds and that will be the end of it. You just probably won't get ok'd for any more refills. I wouldn't worry about it at all. I'm assuming it's walgreens. They always screw things up. They have worked in my favor quite a few times!! (just a quess).
Take Care... and Go Get Your Meds!!

Night_shade has it right. You have little to gain and a lot to potentially loose if you pick it up. Go the honest route. You'll sleep better.

You say the Pharmacist called the Dentist about the refill. The pharmacy will have made note of that in there computer or your file. So actually there is no reason you shouldn't go get your refill. It is doctor authorized. If the dentist or the pharmacy were to ask you just have to tell them you thought that they called and got you another refill on the script. I have run out of perscriptions in the past that I have to take on a daily basis and forgot there were no refills on them and the Pharmacist has called the doctor to have him authorize a refill for me over the phone. In fact he (the doctor) authorized refills for a year on my SO's script once too. Mind you neither of these scripts were for pain meds. But, honestly I really don't see you getting into trouble for their screw up. IF it would get caught. Let us all know what you decide to do. I'm curious....lol I know what I would do. Would've been at the pharmacy within the hour.....lol

I'd pick it up the pharmacy wouldn't waste their time trying to "trap" anyone, they would just deny the refill. Act innocent and smile.

I agree with this last post...believe it or not, doubt there are people with enough time on their hands sitting around wondering how they "set" people up by testing if they'll dip "extra" when they have a chance. A little paranoid in my opinion.

It is very common at Walgreens for this to happen. The computers are not as accurate as you think. Everyday when I worked for them we ran a report of prescriptions that were older than 7 days and would delete them and put the meds back. We would call the customers to see if they had picked up their script and many times they already had and the label had printed twice and been filled twice. Sometimes there would be a whole script filled and sitting in the bin for oxycontins that the patient had already picked up. It is not some kind of trap, it is o.k. to pick it up because this is their mistake. If they don't know about it now, they will never know.

....if they made a mistake, it is also possible for you to make a mistake, Didnt that bottle say it had 2 refills on it?? Dont your teeth still hurt?? When your mortal life has passed and you find yourself (hopefully) checking in at the gates of heaven above, i strongly doubt that the gatekeeper will question you about excepting a few extra hydros. Hurry before they realize theyve made a mistake. Oh, and just for safe measure, do ten "hail mary's".
